The Guide includea 1,000 energy apeclallata in a broad range of teehnologlee: nuclear, aolar, coal, blomaaa, wind and petroleum. They repreaent government, industry, environmental organisations and the academic and scientific communities. The Foundation grant will be used to update and expand the Guide. The second volume -- a Guide to Specialiata on Toxic Substances -- will list over 2,000 individuals who are among the top U.S. experts on the nature and impact of a wide range of toxic substances on human health and the environment. These experts will also be drawn from government, industry, environmental organisations, the scientific and and. Inacademic communities, addition, from labor unions. In announcing the National Science Foundation grant. Whitman Baaaow, executive director of the Center and a former correspondent for United Frees International and Newsweek, said that "the long-range aim of the media service is to help Improve reporting on these complex Issues so that Americana can get a clearer idea not only of what's happening, but of what la at stake for the country and for themselves." Both Guides are scheduled for publication by the end of 1980 and will be updated periodically. One copy of each will be offered free to 2,000 daily newspapers, radio and TV stations. Other funding for the Guides has been provided by private founda tions, corporations and environmental organisations. SUBJECT INDEX (Draft) GUIDE TO SPECIALISTS ON TOXIC SUBSTANCES An Environmental Issues Media Guide to be published by the Center for International Environment Information. AP00025144 INTRODUCTION The Center for International Environment Information, a non-profit, non-advocacy organization, presents this preview of an important and extensive project: a Guide to Specialists on Toxic Substances for the news media. When published in 1980, the Guide will contain the names of approximately 1,000 specialists working on various aspects of toxic substance evaluation and control issues. The Guide is unique in that all individuals listed have agreed, as a public service, to respond to inquiries from the news media for background information and comnents on news developments related to toxic substances. This Guide follows the format of the Guide to Energy Specialists, the first volume in the series of Environmental Issues Media Guides, which the Center has just published. The Toxics Guide is designed to provide the same quick access to specialists, and, although intended mainly for the use of journalists working under deadline pressure, will be an invaluable tool for other professionals in Industry and government. The specialists listed in the Guide are selected by their peers and are of uniformly high calibre. They are drawn from government, the academic community, industry, trade associations, research institutions and environmental organizations In order to provide journalists with a broad range of knowledgeable sources. The Individuals are chosen only after consultation with prominent specialists working in the field and review by appropriate profes sional and trade associations. The Guide is divided into three sections. Section I is the index. Section II repeats the Index categories,'but under each one there Is a list of specialists in the category subject. (A page from the Energy Guide illustrates Section II.) Section III contains an alphabetical listing of the individuals, their addresses, phone numbers and a brief professional profile (illustrated by a page from the Energy Guide). The Guide would be used as follows: a reporter looking for a specialist on waste water treatment in the chemical Industry would first find that topic in Section I (index), then turn to Section II and, under the same heading, see who is listed. Then the reporter turns to Section III where all the names are listed alphabetically, together with the information needed to make the contact. The professional profile of each specialist will help the reporter decide who would be the most appropriate story source.
