Reference (a) requested the N?_U.C Industrial Hygiene Branch to determine concentrations of airborne asbestos fibers generated during a typical shipboard installation of viny1-asbestes floor tile. Conse quently, the subject survey was conducted on 16 Kay 1979 by Mr. Harry f.iroza, S?y.Z Industrial Hygienist. he sirulated c:pe r a ; < cn vas conducted on the second deck of Shop Building 7. Breathing rone sanples for one hour and for 15- =ir.ute intervals were obtained cn both aan as they laid and cut the tiles. In addition, a general area sample vas obtained at the edge of the verk. To simulate the verst possible condition, a 15-ainute breathing tone sarptle vas also obtained while a worker vaa cutting ar.d shaving a floor tile. Throughout the whole operation, both men wore aurgical rubber gloves and 3-M 5710 respirable dust respirators. _' 3. Analysis of each sample vas performed according to the procedure outlined in reference (b). The results shewed that no asbestos fiber was found in any of the sanples analyzed. All resulta are veil below the Threshold Lindt V'alue (TLV) of 2 fibers per cubic centir.ettr of air stated in references (c) ar.d (d). These results were not unexpected for the following reasons: a. The ir-s talla tier and cutting operations do net create a-ry asbestos dust Baron & Budd Butler Countv Auaust 1. 1997 ' 5.2C4 4.J iy/5 . The few asbestos fibers vhich are present are tightly bound in the vinyl tile. Based on the results of the sa=ple analysis, the operation of laying and cutting the vinyl-asbestos tile should constitute no potential health hazards to the vorVers. 4.
