Box 538 Allentown, Pennsylvania Dear Mr. Lashmett I have been asked to forward you toxicity information con- oerning Pydraul AC, with speolal reference to its use as an air compressor lubricant. I would like to point out there are two faoets to this problem. One ie the toxioity of Pydraul AC Itself and the seoond is the concentration of Pydraul AC vapors In the oompressed air at the time it is delivered to the worker for breathing. In animal toxicity screening studies with this produot, the oral lethal dose in rats is approximately 40 grams per kilo gram and in rabblte, 3*3 to 4.5 grams per kilogram. Hie greater sensitivity to rabbits is typioal of this type of fluid, but in either oast the figures are suoh that it would be classed ae having a low order of toxicity from the standpoint of accidental ingestion of single doses. We have tested rats for a 6-hour exposure to an atmosphere saturated with vapors of the fluid. There was a slight reddening of the upper respiratory tract and a slight degree of laohrymation. This in Itself would oonetltute a warning, should large amounts of the material contaminate the air stream and a mist rather than vapors ooour. There were no other effeots either systemic or local. V* have not conducted analyses to deter mine this amount, but it is certainly opinion that the concentration of vapora would be very uinute and should lntroduoa no hasard to workmen breathing the compressed air if it la ueed for air masks. This la especially true in view of th# negative results in our animal vapor exposure. Normally traps or filters are installed in such lines to taka out any odors, vapora, oil droplets or other foreign material. We know this fluid hat bean used in many In stallations similar to the one described, and we have no knowledge of any difficulty resultlng.
