PIGMENT DISPERSION DATA
Information on the dispersion properties of coded pigments has been complied in the following tables. Data was gathered by contacting each supplier and asking for his experience with his materials. In addition, Glidden's past history on pilot plant and plant batches as obtained by M. Malaga with these pigments is shown. In most cases there is good correlation between supplier rating and Glidden results. In a few cases there are some discrepancies. There still are many blank areas where suppliers have not sent in any information or in a number of cases, didn't have any data. These will be supplemented at later dates. Data from M. Malaga's work has been compiled over a period of time on runs made on various pigments.
Numerical values indicate Hegman (ll) grind readings that can be obtained on a Cowles Disperser. Abbreviations can be identified as follows:
C - Cowles (usually refer to solvent systems) CS - Specifically solvent systems on Cowles CW - Water based dispersions on Cowles S - Sand Mill NC - Not recommended for Cowles NS - Not recommended for Sand Mill

22. MAINTENANCE

This is a resume of a lecture delivered by Kenneth Tator, of Kenneth Tator Associates, Coraopolis Pa., before the Toronto Section of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers.
Until the advent of sacrificial coatings in the paint industry, all corrosion protection was obtained by interposing a barrier of some chemical resistant material between the corrodable surface and the corrosive medium. Sacrificial coatings such as Galvanizing and Metal Spraying have a long history of successful use in other than the paint industry.
In order that a Zinc Rich Coating may be considered a sacrificial coating it is necessary to establish a good degree of electrical contact between the particles of Zinc and between the Zinc and the steel. When this is done, the Zinc Rich Coating becomes a sacrificial anode and eventually errodes away leaving the steel uncorroded as long as the Zinc Rich Coating lasts. We should note that this erroding away of the Zinc Rich Coating shows no rust creep or blistering, therefore spot repair is practical even if it is desirable to wait for more favourable conditions for the repair work.
The required high degree of electrical contact between the Zinc particles and between the Zinc and steel is obtained by a close packing of the Zinc particles in the dried film. Obviously, there must be some vehicle present to cement the particles together into a film. For close packing the range of 80^-95$ of the weight of the dried film as Zinc Dust gives the best conductivity. At the 95/6 range for Zinc Dust, rural and semirural protection is achieved. Down at the 8056 Zinc Dust range protection against sea water, etc., can be obtained. The reason for the lower Zinc content where sea water and other strong electrolytes are involved is to allow greater internal resistance so that the sacrificial action will be slowed down to a practical value consistent with protection against corrosion of the steel.
Where no top coating of a Zinc Rich coating is to be used, the pH of the surrounding environment should be between pH 6 and pH 12. In this range the corrosion products of the Zinc Dust are largely, if not entirely, insoluble and act as a cement to further harden and toughen the Zinc Rich film. In a rural or semi-rural environment, these corrosion products would be some combination of Sine Oxide, Zinc Hydroxide, Zinc Carbonate and Basic Zinc Carbonate. Where sea water is involved various chlorides, etc., would also form. In the range pH 1 to pH 6, these products would be removed by acids, while in the range pH 12 to pH l4, they would be removed by alkalis.
The speaker made it clear that a Zinc Rich Coating is a matter of the percent Zinc on the dried film and not any distinction is made as to whether the vehicle is organic or inorganic. Also, for the reasons cited above, a Zinc Dust/zinc Oxide primer cannot function sacrificlally since the chance of electrical contact between the Zinc Dust particles and the Zinc Dust and the steel is too remote.

His ideas on vehicle systems are based on their performance upon exposure when top coated. Briefly, vehicle systems for various applications would fall about as shown below. Great flexibility is allowed due to the wide variety of re quirements of service.

As a means of slowing down the rate of errosion of a Zinc Rich Coating, admixture with Lead or Aluminum is suggested. In such a case the total weight of the two metals would fall into the 80% - 95% range of film weight.
A Zinc Rich Coating does not always act as a sacrificial coating. Indeed, most of its life it acts as a barrier coating, due to the buildup of Zinc corrosion products acting as a cement to harden and toughen the film. This accounts in part for the very long protective life of Zinc Rich coatings. The fact that whenever there is a break in the film, through to the metal, a fresh generation of sacrificial action is instituted is another factor in long life protection.
Top Coating
We questioned Mr. Tator about top coating of Zinc Rich Coatings. His answer was that a Zinc Rich Coating should be treated as a Galvanized surface and primed accordingly. Galvanized Iron Primer Y-471 or Zinc Dust/zinc Oxide Primer is suitable. Of course the Primer must not soften the Zinc Rich Coating and the top coat must not lift the primer. Mr. Tator stated that many Zinc Rich Coatings are available which can be primed and finished with 24 hrs. between coats and that such systems can last up to 8 years.
Our TGL 14971A Zinc Rich Coating, and its successors, will not accept top coating without the top coats eventually pulling the Zinc Rich Coating from the steel. Since Mr. Tator suggests top coating should be possible, perhaps the reason lies in the extremely slow solvent used in our Zinc Rich Coating remaining sealed in the film by the top coats and eventually destroying the adhesion of the Zinc Rich Coating to the steel.

This controversy, wherein we obtained poor weather-o-meter performance, as did Ontario Research Foundation, while Ontario Hydro consistently obtained good weather-o-meter and service performance, might possibly be resolved in this way: we and O.R.F. are essentially chemical laboratories and Ont. Hydro is a physical testing laboratory. This suggests that the pH of the weather-o-meter environment may be outside of pH 6 - pH 12 at C-lidden and O.R.F. most of the time, while Ont. Hydro may be usually in that range. Combining this with the knowledge that linseed oil (part of vehicle in TGL l6ll3A) films swell on exposure to water, it may be that the Zinc Dust particles were simply separated by the water cycle of the weather-o-meter swelling the linseed oil film while at the same time the water had a pH outside the critical range and with very little Zinc to steel contact available, corrosion of the steel started.
