CONCLUSIONS
- The t a n w a te r b o tto m sam ples from b o th b le n d in g and s to r a g e ta n k s 'ware w ith two e x c e p tio n s , f r e e o f s o lu b le le a d compounds. The two samples w ith le a d each had o n ly 7 a g , pb p e r 100 c c . o f s o lu tio n .

The w ater bottom sam ples were sim ply f i l t e r e d and analysed fo r le a d .
The slu d g es u s u a lly c o n tain in g g a so lin e , w a te r, r u s t and s o lid m a tte r were placed in a d i s t i l l i n g fla s k and enough w ater added to bring the liq u id volume to approxim ately 300 c o .
The l i g h t e r g a s o lin e f r a c t i o n s w ore f i r s t ta k e n o f f from th e s id e tu b e o f th e d i s t i l l i n g f l a s k and condensed i n i c e . The s id e tu b e was th e n d o s e d and a l l o f th e vapors re flu x e d u sin g a w a ter condenser to re tu rn th e condensate to an ic e - c o o le d t r a p w h ieh s e p a ra te d th e ..ter from th e o i l l a y e r , and re tu rn e d th e w a te r o n ly to the b o ile r fla s k * The p o rtio n o f th e tr a p v iiere th e o i l la y e r c o lle c te d was g rad u ated , en ab lin g readings to be ta k e n . I f more th a n one f r a c t i o n o f o i l was d o s iro d , th e r e f lu x in g was sto p p ed lo n g enough to p ip e tte out the o il la y er alread y formed.
A f te r e q u ilib riu m was e s t a b l i s h e d , th e sy stem w ith a GOg c o o le d condenser and a gaa b u re tte in th e lin e was c lo se d . Atmospheric p ressu re in th e system was m a in ta in e d and t h e g a s , n o n -co n d en sab le i n CO2 io e was measured in th e b u re tte .
The re flu x in g was continued u n t i l no more o i l o r ?bB t^ la y e r was form ed. T his t i n e v a r ie d from t h r e e t o n in e h o u rs , b u t ivas u s u a lly ab o u t six hours.

Experim ent 277-XP-5 w ith no v o la tilo le a d and h a rd ly any w a te r solubles le a d gave a la rg e amount o f gas* At le a s t v o la tile le ad and w ater so lu b le 2sad compounds were n o t formed by th e changes which produced th s gas e v o lu tio n .
The 67fi Pb re s id u e o f 277-XP-8 was b la c k , s u g g e s tin g s t r o n g l y p r e c i p i t a t e d PbS. Alien some o f t h i s re s id u e was dropped i n d i l u t e li^SO^, HgS g as was e v o lv e d , a to s t d u p lic a ted on pure FbS.

The s to r a g e ta n k a p p e a rs t o be a m ost l i k e l y so u rc e o f dangerous lead containing sludges.
