J Grizzle (Shell Oil) LAM 019550 ABS-000361 ASBESTOS REh-OVAL FROM VESSEL L-12 8 IN ASPHALT PLANT September 19, 1984 ' \) INTRODUCTION \ Due to the inactivity of vessel L-128 the insulation on the vessel drew moisture and a large section fell to the ground. This vessel is located in the asphalt plant. AC&S was engaged to clean-up the fallen insulation and remove the remaining insulation. John A. Jurgiel and Associates monitored this operation for airborne fiber release on September 19, 1984. Background On the day of our survey four AC&S employees were removing insulation from vessel L-128. These employees had been recently trained in the hazards of asbestos exposure. Information regarding the use of respiratory protection had also been provided. The area around the vessel was roped off with asbestos warning tape and portable signs that warned of the presents of asbestos were also placed around the'"demoli tion site. While in the controlled area workers wore disposable full-body protective clothing,, hoods and respiratory-..protection. -Insulation was placed in marked plastic bags as it was removed. ' Because of recent heavy-rains the insulation' was. moist,.and additional water was added as the removal progressed. ' MONITORING Air samples were taken on September 19 , 1984 to document containment of asbestos fibers and potential exposure to the workers. Area and personal samples were taker, with MSA Model G pumps that were calibrated to 2 1pm. The collection media was 0.8 micron MCE filters used in the open face configuration. Fiter levels curing ;the demolition ranged from none detected to C.04 fibers per cubic centimeter (f/cc). These leveles were well within the C-SHA asbestos standard of 2.0 f/cc. The results cf cur monitoring is contained'in the attached table. CONCLUSIONS LAM 019551 Workers were provided with the appropriate personal protective ABS-000362 equipment for the job anc the control measures used during removal were adequate to reduce fiber generation to acceptable levels. \\ LAM 019552 ABS-000363 AIRBORNE FIBER CONCENTRATIONS, DURING INSULATION REMOVAL ON VESSEL L-128 IN ASPHALT PLANT September 19, 1984 Sample Number Time On - Off AC&S-l 1327-1526 AC&S-2 1330-1528 AC&S-3 * =None Detected Location \ general clean-up and bagging.
