Dear Otto:
As you know, the working group on the asbestos and lung cancer was
held in New York in mid-October. The meeting went very well in
deed and as soon as the recommendations are finalized, I will forward
t hem,to you. It was considered by the group that it would be helpful
if.an ad hoc committee could be formed to organize further research
on this subject and to provide a continuous body to maintain collabora
tive studies between institutions -and. organizations interested in pur
suing this problem further. Accordingly, I wish to request your
permission to set up an ad hoc committee with Dr. John Gilson of
the Pneumoconiosis Research Unit, Llandough Hospital, Penarth,
Glamorgan, Wains, as Chairman, and Dr. Tom Mancuso of Pittsburgh,
as Secretary.

If you approve of this in principle, I could then go ahead and contact the various members suggested, asking if they would be willing to serve. The names could then be circulated for approval by the Execu tive Committee of the U. I. C. C.
'
I believe that the U. I. C. C. would be the natural home of such a committee. and would suggest that for the interim, it could retnain under the geo graphical pathology committee under 1966, when its future can be decided with more certainty.
Hoping that you have had a pleasant trip to the United States and that
all la going well with you.
Sincerely yours.
