Dear Pat cy : Thanks very much lor your letter oi March 7 In relation to the publication of A.I.H.A. papers and our policy toward the publishers of Journals. I have not replied since I have not reached any conclusion, but I am inclined to feel that matters may veil come to a head in the near future and that it would not hurt anything to invite Peterson, Eappington and Drinker to give us their ideas on this subject at the meeting of the Board of Directors. In the state of flux in which these matters are at present, we shall be in no position to make any commitments, or so I strongly suspect. On the other hand, we might find out about the ideas that are in circulation. I quite agree that we do not want to tie ourselves in to a medical journal at this stage of the game. Nor do we want to confine ourselves in any way to what might turn out to be 'the controlling activities of the American Medical Association. I think I need not labor that point or give my reasons for it. On the other hand, I do not feel that we can continue in any very official relationship with a journal that is as bad from every point of viev as "Industrial Medicine." Certainly in the present situa tion I would not want to see the "Journal of Industrial Hygiene and Toxicology" fold up. We should then be in a very bad posi tion. As to the last paragraph of your letter I shall be pleased to make a few remarks which will not be very lengthy, at the Wednesday afternoon joint session of the Association, and your other assignment is entirely agreeable to me. I am pleased to find that I shall not have to say anything at the Thursday evening dinner. There is a matter which has 0ust come to my attention through Ed Holmblad, about which you should be advised. A.A.I.P.and S. is prepared to agree at once to having the next meeting in Boston in the week of April 27 - May 2. They want to know Mr. Frank Patty - (2j - March 29, 1946 whether we will agree to that arrangement. They further say that from now on plans will have to be made two years In advance. I have replied , saying that I could not commit my sell' on behalf of our organization, anu that the whole matter will have to he threshed out in a meeting of the Boai'd of Directors. I did say that I 3av. no personal objection to Boston and the cate in ques tion, but that that had notaing whatever to do with the action of our organization. 1 had in mind that ve should have to con sider seriously on the basis of this year's experience whether we would continue in the joint relationship or whether ve would have a meeting on cur own. I am net prepared to express an opinion and obviously I did not make any reference to the matter in writing to Kolmblad . however, it is something which you should give thought, i am not writing about this to the Board of Directors, feeling that we can discuss the matter in detail at our next meeting, however-, in view cl yeux- responsibilities you may wish co sound cut a few men in advance of our meeting.
