2. Commentaries end lent--udetiona
Although Dr. Potts feels that the present Mobil employee health protection program Is good, he recognises thst meeting the Increasing OSHA requirements for the 70*s requires, among other points, an expansion of the safety men's role and an even closes cooperation vlth the Industrial hygienists and physicians underscoring the teem approach to environmental health coverage. Xn order to meet these goals 'he makes the following recommendations.:
1. Environmental Monitorins
Day-to-day monitoring of the work environment should be made part of the local safety man's responsibility. The type of monitoring performed by the safety man and the frequency should be determined by the Industrial hygienist based upon periodic industrial hygiene surveys. Increased responsibilities of an on-site monitoring program and the requisite technical background should upgrade the- safety man's job end, wherever possible, establish full-time safety personnel vlth local or area reaponaibilltlee, depending upon the safety activities end requirements.
2. Training

The Mobil hygienists can probably tailor s abort term course In the use of monitoring squifmeur to the particular needs of the Mobil safety personnel) however, this should mot preclude the poselhls use of govarumsot or university sponsored shore term training courses. All routine sampling data should be reviewed regularly by the industrial hygienist who still has overall responsibility for environmental aonltorlng. If this new concept foe the sefeey man's role Is adopted, the mashers end selection of sefeey personnel involved should be ascertained so that the industrial hygiene group can establish atima table for easting this objective.
3. Industrial Hygienist Safety Advisor tolas
Dr. Potta emphasized that he regards the industrial hygienist as the "auditor" of ssvironmsntsl health conditions in the work plans, i.e, the industrial hygienist cannot physically perform an on-golng or continuous survey of the work environs mat at any glvme alts and Is sbls to assess tha over-ell environmental health conditions mainly dvring tha periodic industrial hygiene surreys. The plant or local afsty nan, thersfors, has - serve as the day-to-day monitor of anvlronasntal con ditions, but obviously the roles cannot be mutually exclusive insofar as employes
