ESHA PROCEDURE: SA-12
SECTION: SAFETY
DATE: 7-10-89
SUBJECT: LABORATORY DRESS POLICY
PAGE: 1 OF 1
PURPOSE:
To establish a minimum dress standard (for protective purposes) for all personnel working with chemicals in laboratory areas.
POLICY:
All personnel working with chemicals in the laboratory must comply with the following minimum dress standard. This policy does not apply to all personnel present in the laboratory area, only those working with chemicals.
1. Shoes
Safety shoes, while not required, are recommended. Shoes which could absorb or trap liquid spills, (e.g. sandals or fabric top shoes) may not be worn while working with chemicals in the laboratory area. The use of a chemically resistant rubber boot should be considered for especially corrosive or toxic chemicals.
2. Clothing
When working with some chemicals, depending on toxicity and/or corrosiveness, it is necessary to protect exposed skin on the arms and legs against chemical contact. When deemed necessary by an employee and/or their supervisor, long sleeved shirts (or lab coat) and full length pants (or long apron), may be required. Additional protection (full slicker suits, etc.) may also be required when working with some hazardous chemicals.
3. Safety Glasses
Industrial approved (ANSI Standard) safety glasses with side shields must be worn while working or observing work in a lab. Safety glasses without side shields are acceptable only in the hallways and when walking through a lab to one of the offices. Safety glasses with side shields are not required to be worn under goggles. The use of goggles is man
datory under certain conditions (please see Goggles Policy SA-15). Detachable side shields are stocked by the ESHA department.
