`Spare the paint and spoil the house
An old adage with a new twist--and what a lot of people it hits!
The "Save the'Surface" campaign is direct ed at just these people. - By co-operative effort, paint and varnish manufacturers, wholesalers, dealers and painters are showing them their . mistake.
This benefits you, and everyone engaged in making or selling paints and varnishes. It means more business for us all.
Are you spreading the gospel of "Save the Surface"?

He Didn't Take Susie's Advice
"Frank," said Susie, one day in March, "you ought to paint the barn this spring. It needs it."
"No," said Frank, "I'd rather save the money for something else."
i Frank "saved the money" for a couple of years--then he spent it all, and some more, to put on a new roof, repair other damage the weather had done to the barn--and paint it.
The "Save the Surface" campaign aims to make property owners realize that a good way to save money is to paint their barns, houses, fences, furniture, wagons, farm implements:
Paint and varnish manufacturers, wholesal ers, dealers and painters, working co-operatively in this way, increase the country's paint and varnish business, and each one's share increases in proportion.
You can increase your sale of paints and var nishes by co-operating in the "Save the Surface" campaign.

If You Owned the Western Union-
How would you increase your business?
You'd do just what the Western Union is doing--get people to send more telegrams.
If a dozen telegraph companies had offices in your town, what would be the. best way for them to do more business--take it away from each other, or do what the Western Union is doing?
You know the answer--and doesn't the same principle apply to the paint business?
It does apply--or there wouldn't be a "Save the Surface" campaign. Because it applies this "Save the Surface" advertising is in creasing the business of pa,int dealers every where.
Dealers are getting the quickest, biggest re sults in towns where they get together and work together in a joint "Save the Surface" campaign.
If the'dealers in your town aren't doing this very thing--start something!
It'll pay--for the one big way to sell more paint is to educate people to use more paint --to teach people to "Save the Surface" by painting oftener, and by painting roofs, fences, farm machinery and other "surfaces" where paint has been used meagerly or not at all.

Ever Hear of Raisin Pie?
A generation ago, only, a few housewives made raisin pie. It was unheard-of in res taurants.
Raisin.pies were popularized by the raisin growers of California. They wanted to sell more raisins--and instead of each one trying to take business away from the others, they set out to create a bigger raisin market. One of the means adopted was to popularize raisin, pie, by means of clever advertising.
The same sound,. sensible idea is back of "Save the Surface."
Manufacturers, jobbers, dealers, painters won't have to try to take business away from one another if the whole paint and painting industry increases in volume. And the "Save the Surface" campaign is having just this # effect.
Hundreds of letters on file at "Save the Sur face" headquarters bear witness that people have been impelled to paint oftener, to use paint on surfaces they had not. previously thought of saving. .
This means more work for all painters, more business for all who make and sell paint and allied products.
Are you helping your business by putting your individual impetus into the "Save the Surface" campaign?

The Other 99 Eskimos
Suppose one Eskimo, in a village of ioo, discovered the joys of the bath, and bought a tub.
The bathtub manufacturers wouldn't compete for his business, they would try to show the other 99 Eskimos the advantages of bathing.
That would be the way to sell bathtubs. The way to sell paint is the same. Show people the wisdom of "Saving the Surface" by painting oftener, by using paint where it hasn't 'been used before--and there will be more painting done, more paint used.
Dealers who are workitig together in their com-

The Barn That Jack Built
It was a.good bam--but Jack let it get weather-beaten and warped for lack of re painting.
Then came the "Save the Surface" cam paign, and the barn got a new coat. Now it will be repainted oftener. Its owner knows that frequent painting is real economy.
Ail over the country people are painting houses, barns, garages and outbuildings which would have gone paintless had it not been :for the "Save the Surface" advertising.
Paints, varnishes and stains are being used on floors, woodwork and furniture by those who have got the message of "Save the Surface."

It hadn't occurred to Peters that the money he was "saving" by not painting his house was really no .saving at all, because rain and wind and sun and frost were do ing a greater amount of damage.
One day Peters read a "Save-the Surface" advertisement, arid the - next thing he did was to telephone to a painter.
Peters' letter is on file at "Savethe-Surface" headquarters. He ^ says all his buildings are going to be painted twice as often as for merly, strictly as a measure of economy. *

THE BANKERS5 INFLUENCE ON THE PAINT MARKET
One of New York's master painters told the following story at the recent .Convention of the International Asso ciation of Master House Painters and Decorators:
"I was called into a conference between a prop erty owner and a banker. The property owner was applying for a loan and the banker refused the loan until the man had his property painted. The banker said: `I have been reading the "Save the Surface" advertisements and I ani looking to the security for my money three years from now, and I know that three coats 6 paint will increase the credit value of the security' ",
This incident is typical o the attitude of a few bankers thruout the country. A questionnaire recently sent out by
the "Save the Surface" Campaign to a large number of bank
ers demonstrated that the majority of them recognized that
the painte'd condition of a property is an index to the*
owner's credit but we doubt if the bankers of the country
realize as fully as they should the economic function of paint
and varnish.
+
The "Save the Surface" Campaign is helping to educate bankers as well as property owners.

increasing the Market
for Paint.
Recently-, in the Philadelphia offices of the "Save the Surface" Campaign, we were shown the following extract from a letter received from an outdoor advertising sign com pany. The letter, we are told, is typical of hundreds which have been received by the association. It struck us as being very indicative.
"I always knew that if the surface was kept protected, all would be protected, but it was such a common truth that I did not think anything about it until I read your advertisement about it. - This impressed it upon me, and though oil is high, I have been doing considerable construction of outdoor advertising signs and have painted all of the woodwork on ah sides, something I have never done before.
I think your education campaign is a good one and will actually bring money to the sellers of paints and varnishes, in addition to doing a great deal of good to those who use them."

A WISE OLD FARMER WAS HE
A farmer near Worcester, Mass, sold his implements the other day for 33 1-3%
more than he paid for them about ten years ago. He was so enthusiastic that when he came to town he went to the store of a friend--a paint dealer--to tell him all about it. The Save the Surface Campaign Headquarters has shown us the letter which the dealer wrote telling the remarkable story of the transaction.
Gentlemen:--
1 Save just gotten a tale from a farmer who lives near here who is selling out his farm and he came in my store to-day and thanked me for selling him some paint several years ago. I had forgotten it but he says I got him to paint all his implements, tools and machines. He got rid of them at one-third more than they-cost. He says he thinks the paint made all the difference.
Not such a bad ad for the Save the Surface I
There are $ 1,250,000,000 worth of farm machinery and implements in use in the United States today. This is just one of the many dormant markets for paint and varnish that is being developed by the Save the Surface Campaign.

er Gets a'New Idea Arif! a Sjales Manager An Order
Save the .Surface Headquarters has given us permission to publish the following sales manager's letter to his salesmen:
To All Salesmen:
Not long- ago the writer called on ax general merchant in Ohio with a view to selling him our line. My introduction was met with that well-known phrase, "I do not intend to buy paint this year." It was stated very em phatically.
Here was a paint dealer--the only one in town of possibly 200 inhabitants--ten miles from a railroad--His stock in such a con dition to warrant the placing of an order--yet He was unwilling to even talk about paint.
I showed him the; advertising features now being used by the "Save the Surface" campaign-- sold him that idea--and took away an order amounting to 30% more in volume than he had ever bought before, without once men tioning die fact- that I wanted to sell paint. In other words, I sim ply cashed in on the good work of that campaign. My idea was to use this campaign as an incen tive to create a selling force amongthe dealers and painters in ' that territory.
I would like to see each of our salesmen consider himself a Sales Manager for this "Save the Sur face" campaign. His salesmen are the painters, master painters and dealers in .his territory. Teach them to sell. The master painter is not always a good salesman, and he is sometimes unskilled in advertising. He should be taught to be a good salesman of bis own business--a salesman of painting jobs. Now, if you can inspire these painters to be salesmen of painting jobs, to get people to realize that they ought to paint _ more for their own good, and actually be right on tjiis job to take the contract you will further this whole idea of getting ulti mate consumers to realize that their own interests lie in the use of more paint Even though our line of goods is not directly mentioned, they will naturally lean toward our product. Why? Because you have shown -by your teaching that your interest in them is deeper than the mere get ting of an order.
(Signed by the Sales Manager.)

The paint business is a big round industrial Pie. The business each man does is his slice of the pie--whether he is a manufacturer, a dealer, or a painter.
A bigger slice for one fellow doesn't need to mean a smaller slice for some other fellow--if we j ust make the pie bigger.
That's what the "Save the Surface" campaign is doing. Thousands of letters on file at "Save the Surface" headquarters- show that this adver tising is teaching people the benefits--and the veal economy--of using more paint.
It is paying painters, and it is paying deal ers, to get together in their, communities for "Save the Surface". They soon produce the bigger pie--the bigger slice for each. More for the dealer, the painter, the wholesale distributor, the manufacturer.

Bumpers
Fore and Aft
Most automobiles have bumpers in front. Have the bumper manufacturers nearly reached the saturation point? .Must their sales be in creased only within the limits of the increase in the number of automobiles?
The day is coming when manufacturers of bumpers will begin to remind every automobile owner that'the back of bis car is as valuable as the front.
That will be a good way for each of these manufacturers to sell more bumpers, without going after the other fellow's business.
The "Save the Surface" Campaign is doing just the same thing for everybody in the paint in dustry---painter, dealer, jobber, manufacturer. It is teaching people to use paint where paint has not been used before.
Also it is teaching people the real economy of painting oftener.
BeKming, as we do, that the "Save the Surface" advertising is a powerful influence in increasing the% volume of painting done in this country, and believing that we, like all the other manufacturers tu the paint and allied Hues, are receiving our share of the benefits of this advertising, we gladly devote this space to the promotion of this co-oper-

The Bam That Jack Built
It was a good barn--but Jack let it get weather beaten and warped, for lack of repainting.
Then came the "Save the Surface" campaign, and the barn got a new coat. Now it will be re painted oftener. Its owner knows that frequent painting is real economy.
All over the country, people are painting houses, barns, farm machinery and implements, garages, and outbuildings which would have gone paintless . had it not been for the "Save the Surface" adver tising.
Paints, varnishes and stains are being used on floors, woodwork and furniture by those who have got the message of "Save the Surface."
People will continue to use more paint and buy more paint if all of us--manufacturers, jobbers, dealers, painters--stick together and work 'to gether in the "Save the Surface" campaign.

They All Got More Business
THERE is a small town in the middle west where ail the painters and paint dealers clubbed together in a cooperative effort to increase the use of paint.
The average house owner in that town formerly repainted about once in eight years. Now the aver age is nearer five years.
That tnean.s the paint business in that town has been increased about sixty per cent. Each dealer and painter is getting about his share of the increase.
That's just wh.at the "Save the Surface" adver tising is doing on a big scale for manufacturers and distributors of paint, varnish and allied products..
It is increasing the consumption of those products and making more business for everybody.

If a dozen telegraph companies had offices in your town, what would be the best way for them to do more business--take it away from each other, . or do what the Western Union is doing?
You know the answer--and doesn't the same principle apply to the paint business ?
It does apply--or there wouldn't be a "Save the Surface" campaign. Because it applies, this "Save die Surface" advertising is increasing the use of paint, and the sales' of paint, all over the country.
The one big way to sell more paipt is to educate people to use more paint--to teach people to "Save die Surface" by painting oftener, and by painting roofs, fences,.ann machinery and other "surfaces" where paint has been used meagerly or not. at all.

A Dealer Gets a Mew Idea
And a Sales Manager An Order
Save the Surface Headquarters has given us per mission to publish the following sales manager's letter to his salesmen'.
To All Salesmen:
Not long ago the writer called op a general merchant in Ohio with a view to selling him our line. My introduction was met with th^t well known phrase "I do not intend to buy paint this year". It was stated very em phatically.
Here was a paint dealer--the only one in town of possibly 200 inhabitants--ten miles from a railroad--his stock in such a condition to- warrant the plac ing of an order--yet be was un willing to even talk about paint.
I showed him the advertising features now being used by the "Save the Surface" campaignsold him that idea--and took away an order amounting to 30% more in volume than he had ever bought before, without once mentioning the fact that I wanted to sell paint. In other words, I simply cashed in on the gopd work of that campaign. My idea was to use this cam paign as an incentive to create a selling force among the dealers and painters in that territory.
I would like to see each of our
salesmen consider himself a Sales Manager for this `'Save the ` Surface" campaign. His salesmen are the painters mas ter painters and dealers in his territory. Teach them to sell. The master painter is not al ways a good salesman, and he is sometimes unskilled in adver tising. He should be taught to be a good salesman of his own business--a salesman of painting jobs. Now, if you can inspire these painters to be salesmen of painting jobs, to get people to realize that they ought to paint more for their own good, and actually be right on his job to take the contract you -will fur ther this whole idea of getting ultimate consumers to realize that their own interests lie in the use of more paint. Even though our line of goods are not directly mentioned, they will naturally lean toward our prod uct. Why? Because you have shown by your teaching that your interest in them is deeper than the mere getting of an order.

"When times are good, all business is good. When times are bad, some business is very bad and some is only slightly bad.
There must be a reason why some businesses are affected more than others. We suspect that it is because the products of some industries are looked upon by the- public as essential under all conditions.

A Wise Old Farmer Was He
A farmer near Worcester, Mass., sold his implements the other day ifor 33j4 per cent more than he paid fon them about ten years ago. He was so enthusiastic that when he came to town he went to the store of a friend-- a paint dealer--to tell him all about it.
The Save the Surface Campaign Headquarters has shown us the letter which the dealer wrote telling the remarkable story of the transaction.
Save the Surface Campaign, Philadelphia, Pa.
Gentlemen:
I have just gotten a tale from a farmer who lives near here who is selling out his farm and he came in - my store today and thanked me for selling him some paint several years ago. I had forgotten it, but he Says I got him to paint all his implements, tools and machines. He got rid of them at one-third more than they cost. He says he thinks the paint made all the difference. Not such a bad ad for the. Save. the .Surface!
Your Friend.
There are $1,250,000,000 worth of farm machinery and implements in use in the United States today. This is just one of the many dormant markets for paint and varnish that is being developed by the Save the Surface Campaign.

to Send for a Painter
Thompson wasn't stingy. He had a good automobile; his family wore good clothes; two boys were in college.
His house, barn and fences were badly in need of paint--but that was only because Thompson, like most of his neighbors, didn't believe in painting oftener than once in six or eight years.
Then one day Thompson read a "Save the Surface" advertisement--and the next thing he did was to send for a painter.
He had suddenly realized that it is true economy to paint, because paint does save the surface.
The "Save the Surface" campaign is doing just that kind of work all over the country. Thousands of letters received at "Save the Surface" headquarters prove this.

When You Buy N. R. A. Cartridges
Look for the Make as Well as the Name
During the war, we developed a Long Rifle Lesmok cartridge of unprecedented accuracy at ranges of from 50 to 250 yards.
This cartridge seemed particularly well adapted to the needs of expert riflemen. These are the men who form the backbone of the National Rifle Association. So we named this cartridge the U. S. 22 N.R.A. It seemed an especially suitable name.
Apparently other people agreed with us in that; for after spending some eighteen months of time and some thousands of dollars popularizing the name and telling the riflemen about the cartridge we notice that others have appropriated the same designation-- "N.R.A."--for a cartridge of the long rifle style.
The U. S. ,22 N.R.A. is the original 22 Long' Rifle cartridge developed for long) range work. We are convinced it has not been equalled. We do not think it is likely to be equalled. If it can be improved upon, you may be sure we will do the improving.
Under the circumstances, we feel that we owe it to our friends--to those thousands who have come to associate the name "N.R.A." with a certain highly developed cartridge of our make--to warn them of the possibility of confusion and the need for making sure that the U. S. name and trademark appears on the box when they ask for N.R.A. cartridges.

After trying all the brands of .22 long rifle cartridges now on the market we have come to the conclusion that our old favorite "U. S." still leads the field. We have therefore ordered a case of N. R. A. uncrimped from your Boston office for the use of our rifle team.
We were afraid that the post-war ammunition would not come up to pre-war standards but find that your cartridges stall "hit where we aim." I am enclosing some ten shot targets. These are of the ordinary run and therefore do not show any record breaking groups but show that every shot is a ten.
Very truly-yours,

Using a Peteison barrel in a Ballard action I have been able to get occasional "possibles" at 50 yards, but have been uniformly unsuccessful in getting satisfactory results at 100 and 200 yards, although twenty lots of ammunition, representing five makes, were ti ied. What I want to let you know is that the new run of U. S. N. R. A., crimped, has produced the results which I had begun to despair of ever obtaining."

IT, S. .22 N. R. A. Cartridges are especially adapted to the making of top scores with super-accurate target pistols, and the hand-gun competitions at Camp Perry give ajmple proof of their reliability.
Their superiority over all other makes was undeniably demonstrated in the results of every competition where target pistols were permitted.
In the Individual Slow Fire Re-Entry Match, out of ten medal winners, 8 places were won with U. S. .22 N. R. A. cartridges. All other commercial makes won two. places. In the money prizes in this event, 23 of 30 prize winners, iused U. S. AH other commercial makes won 7 places.
In the Individual Slow Fire Single Entry Match, the first prize with a score of 100, second, third and fourth places, and nearly all of the remainder of the 30 prizes were won with U. S. .22 N. R. A. cartridges.
180-GRAIN PALMA
Early this year, the United States Cartridge Company decided against making up any special match ammuniton because its factory'was already running to capacity with commercial business.
Hundreds of riflemen who know the precision and accuracy which may be con fidently expected from the famous 180-grain Palma, insisted that a supply be available for the National Matches.
It was impossible to meet the full demand, but those whom we were able to supply, found that their faith in U. S. 180-grain Palma was justified.
In the Grand Aggregate Match--total of the scores in the Wimbledon, Leech, Marine Corps, Members' and President's Matches, the supreme test of consistent performance--the winner, and 5 of the first 8 prizes winners used U. S. 180-grain i Palma.
In the Members Match, the winning score Qf 50 with 9 additional bull's-eyes,`and the scores in 5 of the 6 first places were made with U. S. 180-grain Palma.
In the Leech Cup Match, the winning score of a possible-at each range and 11 additional bull's-eyes, as well as the scores in 3 of the first places, were made with U. S. 180-grain Palma.
In the President's Match, 9 of the first 12 prizes winners, and 46 of those who finished in "The President's Hundred" used U. S. 180-grain Palma. The greater number of the remaining places in this select coterie of marksmen were won with government ammunition.

First, second and third individual prizes were also won with this unequalled .22. The Olympic matches in England in 1908 and in Stockholm in 1912 -were also won by American teams, using U. S. ammunition. There is no mystery about the reason for the choice of U. S.9ammunition in these important international contests. An article in July 15 issue of Arms and the Man, in describing the equipment of the American Small-Bore Rifle Team makes the following statement:
"They picked U. S. ammunition for the cold-blooded reason that they found it to shoot straighter than anything else on the market."

This Happens! What Do You Do When it Happens in Your Store?
A man comes into you/ store for The Black Shells loaded with No. 6 shot. You're out of No. 6, but you have No. 5. Before he feels disappointed, you show him how little the difference in the two sizes is. (Look at the above illustration and see this . for yourself.) Then he's perfectly satisfied with what you have. He leaves your store with a box of shells instead of a grouch against you for not having just what he wants.
This is only one of many ways in which our Countersign deLuxe makes business for
you. On your counter, this very handsome 11x9 inchsignwithits red and blade lettering against a gold-leaf background in a mahog anyframecatchesyourcustomer's attention. Then the detail thoroughly interests him.
Those circles show the various powders and shot sizes in common use.
When you once see this valuable counter sign you'll get a new idea of quality in dealer helps.
We have a limited supply of these signs and will send them on request to dealers who sell The Black Shells.

Something Worth Getting
This 2 2-karat -gold-leaf sign `1 dresses up "a show-window as truly as a flower in your buttonhole. It is so costly that we send a man to cement it in place on well-located stores with real show windows.
The above reproduction only sug gests its beauty. The Sign de Luxe itself is in two colors--red and black. It is 16x9 inches. The background and the brass parts of the ammunition are faced with 22karat gold leaf. It's an ornament.
Also, a trade-getter. That's why it pays us to send a man to put it up on good show windows.
It catches the attention of shoot ers who use U. S. Ammunition and The Black Shells, and fixes in their minds where to buy when they need more. And it interests others suf ficiently to make them come into your store and ask questions.
If you have a good window and a good location, you want this sign. Write early.
