lix.' Edward F. 3rnle, John T. Lewis & Bros. Oo., Wldener Bldg., Philadelphia, Pa. Uy dear Ur. Beale:--
I have your letter of Deo. 13th and eorry 1 cannot give you the exact dates when this transaction occurred.
It always does me (rood to think of George T. Lewie. He rao one of thn best friends I had when we started in business. He nevor gave me a dollar for nothing, but he did put his hand on my onoulder and nay: "Go ahead. I will stand back of you;" and I renemorr distinctly his telling Ur. John T. Lewie: "Let this man, Nice, have nil the credit he wants until I say no."
Well, that is enough before we come to the regular quectlon. The Collier White Lead, affair if I_TBmamber__ distinctly was between 18(50 and 1884. ^We made a contract with the Collier finite Lead Co. for 100 tons of White Lead. . I rather think Ur. George T. Lewis got up the contract. It read just like thin: "100 tons of Collier's Beet White Lead ground in oil, packages as wanted; to be delivered in part or whole during the year, or *>. countermanded at our option, with protection against decline in price? j So you sec we were not bound in anyway at all to take the lead if we didn't want it, but Ur. George ?. Lewie said he would take the 10Q / tons, and when I asked him what he would give me for it, be said, "25d a 100 more than y-u paid." Z sold him the lead. We ordered one o; two lots delivered to George T. Lewis and the Collier people cams over to sen us and raised a rumpus and said they would not deliver us any more lead. I said,"You will deliver whatever we want during the year, unlees we countermand it, ae that is the contract," and tnen they told me about selling to George T. Lewis. I told them that there was nothing in the oontract to prohibit us from selling to George T. Lewis, and that Lewis was good pay, and that was what we wanted.

They made quite a little complaint about what Lewie was doing, and 1 told tnem that tiie matter was between them and the White Lead people, and that they would have to go over and tallc to Lewie about it, ae it wao none of my bueineao whatever. I don't remember now just wnat wao done, but there was something fixed up someway in which1 we countermanded tne balance of tne order that had not been taken.
1 am very norry tnat I cannot give you the exact dates, but find our records are pretty well destroyed back that far,but what I hove told you lo Just te way tue matter was put through.
Wlnhing you the Oompliments of the Season, I remain
