FLAACBTO-RGAETNO0R10Y Sixty liver samples collected from various species of birds were characterized with respect to specific fluorochemicals. The birds were classified according to specie and geographic location. Six species of birds are represented in this study, including Sandhill Cranes, Double-Crested Cormorants, White Pelicans, Brown Pelicans, Great Blue Herons, and Brandt's Cormorants. The bird were found at a variety of sites across the United States including Nebraska, New Mexico, Florida, Arizona, California, Louisiana, and Florida. In general, the cause of death to these birds is unknown. Details about the location each bird was found and about die cause of death (if known) are included in Appendix C of this report. Liver samples were homogenized and extracted using an ion-pairing extraction procedure. The extracts were quantitatively analyzed for PFOS and PFOSA using high-pressure liquid chromatography/electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (HLPC/ESMSMS), and evaluated versus a standard curve extracted from rabbit liver. Analytical details are available in the study binder maintained by FACT in the 3M Environmental Lab. The presence or absence of other known fluorochemical contaminants and metabolites (PFOSAA, M556, M570, POAA, M513, PFHS, and PFDS) was determined by inspection of HPLC/ESMSMS analysis of 2 bird livers within each group. A frill list of acronyms is attached in Appendix B. fWroimth tthhee leixvceerspotiofanlol ofmfthoestboirfdthsewSearenddheitlelrCmrianneedstaoncdoantsainingPleFBOrSowabnoPveelitchaenmfreotmhoCd alilmifoitronifaq, uthaenteixtattriaocnts (M DL=10ppb).
