ASBESTOS STUDY COT-SUTTEE REPORT The Asbestos Study Committee has had a relatively quiet year in that we have been awaiting further action by O.S.H.A. on the proposed reduction of the standard for exposure to asbestos. We are also very much interested in what the standard for the construction industry will be. Because there was no activity in these areas during 1976, no formal meetings were held. I do, at this time, wish to express special thanks to Edward Drislane and Ike Weaver, who did kindly and ably handle the work of the Committee during my extended illness. At a meeting on March 28 this year, there was some discussion regarding membership participation on the Committee, We would like, at this time, to solicit involvement by corporate members who are not now active. Ideally, each corporate member would have one representa tive on the Committee; we presently have representatives from five companies, Your Committee has been active in the area of providing information regarding dust control in the work place and in the brake shops. Booklets, slide presentations and other indoctrination material has been disseminated to the membership, and a formalized slide presenta tion is being considered by the Committee for possible use by members. A write up, 'Recommended Procedures For Reducing Asbestos Dust During Brake Servicing," is being incorporated in the Institute catalogs " and being distributed to trade magazines and to news media when requested. Close liaison is being maintained with the Asbestos Information Association, particularly since they are close to the O.S.H.A. people in Washington. A.I.A. has recommended to O.S.H.A. that action on the asbestos standard be deferred until the construction regulation has been established. Me sincerely hope that our government does not over-react to the cries of a few at the expense of many.
