No. 246 - 1948 May 10 FIVE PROMOTIONS, ONE RETIREMENT ANNOUNCED Five advancements in the company have been announced, ranging from the general office to National Lead Company SA (Argentina). Henry Whitson, who has been sales manager of dry pigments, Atlantic Branch since November 1942, was appointed assistant to the Manager of sales for paint, oil and pigments, effective May 15. Mr. Whitson started as a sales trainee in the Atlantic Branch on October 1, 1932, and a year later became a salesman. In 1940 he was appointed assistant sales manager of dry pigments. South American Changes M. L. Shoemaker, president of National Lead Company SA (Argentina) since January 1930, retired on May 1 after 42 years of service. He is succeeded by Joseph B. Tierney. Mr. Shoemaker started as a clerk in John T. Lewis & Bros. Co., Philadel phia, on May 14, 1906. In 1913 he was appointed assistant superintendent at Baltimore and assistant sales manager there in 1917. In October of the same year he went to National Lead Company SA (Argentina) as manager and vice-pres ident. Mr. Tierney started on February 1, 1907 as a clerk in National Lead Com pany of Massachusetts. Successively, he became cashier and salesman. On Jan uary 1, 1922, he was appointed assistant manager of National Lead Company SA (Argentina), after serving in World War I. He became general manager in Jan uary 1930 and a vice-president in March of that year. Claude M. Merrell succeeds Mr. Tierney as vice-president and general man ager. Mr. Merrell started with'the company as a traveling auditor in the comp troller's office on June 3, 1935* He held this position until called to war service in 1941, being discharged in 1945 as an Army captain. Resuming his position as auditor in 1945, Merrell first went to South America on an audit in 1946. In January 1947, he was assigned there and has been in South America since. Two Promotions in Cincinnati Branch Samuel R. Hollingsworth and George W. Penaery have advanced to assistant managerships of the Cincinnati Branch. Mr. Hollingsworth started with the company on July 9, 1934. He was made superintendent of the Georgia Lead Works on May 1, 1937, and assistant sales manager of Cincinnati Branch's metal division in March 1943. In April 1945 he was appointed sales manager. Mr. Pendery started as a clerk in the Cincinnati Branch on October 15, 1923. In 1938 he became sales manager of the Georgia Lead Works, and in 1944 was appointed plant manager. MARTINO AND .WILDNER VISIT SOUTH AMERICA Joseph A. Martino, president of National Lead Company, and Harry C. Wildner, comptroller, returned recently from a two-week aerial trip to Argentina.
