This will pave the way for the organization of a substan tial little painting department. ---------The annual report of the Hocking Valley shows that its equipment consists of 133 locomotives, 73 passen ger cars and 15,333 freight and miscellaneous cars, an item which proves that Master Painter P. J. Hoffman is fully engaged In bearing "the white man's burden." ---------The Pullman Car Company has recently placed an order with the Buffalo Steet Works for 553 tons of steel for repair shops at Buffalo, at which point, in due season, a busy swarm of painters will be employed. ---------The American Locomotive Company is engaged upon an order from the Southern Bailway for 35 Santa Fe type locomotives. This will serve as a substantial contribution to painting activities on the Southern. ---------George Douglas, foreman painter of the Lehigh Valley Transit Company, of Allentown, Fa., is an old steam railway painter, having been at one time employed at the Harmon shops ot the New York Central Lines. Allentown is noted for pretty girls, and it may he said, in confidence, that George thinks the world and all of two. Their names are Margaret and Dorothy, and they happen to be his daughters, and they are such good girls that father Douglas has a perfect right to feel mighty proud of them. ---------The death of W. D. Jones, nf Portsmouth. Va,, for the past twelve years master painter of the Seaboard Air Line shops; at Portsmouth, occurred May 31 at a hospital in that city after an illness ot only four days. The fune ral services were held June 3. T. Congdon, of the South Tacoma, Wash, shops of the Northern Pacific; is Just now very busy keeping the equipment at the western end of the system in traffic condition, and in his usual effi cient manner keeping ft well painted. Some yeare ago, Congdon came East to attend a M. C. and L. p. A. conven tion and while in this section viaited a number of rail way paint shops, but the call of the great Northwest country was upon him, and banks overflowing with money and tame flirting with him at way stations failed to begniie him. As usual the "boys" of the painting department are doing their part tn making this cam paign productive of results beneficial to the company. -------- Charles Stout, for Boventeen years a Journey man locomotive painter employed in Master Painter D. A. Little's department, having reached the age of 65 years, has been retired by the Pennsylvania Ballrofid, his pension dating from December 31. Mr, Stout learned his trade under the foremanship of Charles Mason at the Twelfth Street, Altoona, shops of the Pennsylvania, beginning April, 1B71, and remained at these shops until he was employed under Mr. LitUeCharley Stout is known to many painters In all parts of the country. As a drummer for many yean in the famous old Altoona City Band, he literally drummed himself into the hearts of the lovers of baud music. In the hundreds of parades which Charley headed as the rub-a-dub artist, he was always envied and followed by more boys than almost any other attraction could muster in a day's inarch, and if yon have ever been a boy you may understand that no higher compliment could be paid a drummer. W. 0. Guest worked with Charley in the Altoona shops, under Mr. Mason's ad ministration. D. A. KEITH, former president of the Southern Pine Association, who has been giving much of Us time to the study ot economical conditions, bath at home and abroad, is quoted ae saying recently that there was a tremendous building boom In sight.
