Ref. Ares(2024)5185730 - 17/07/2024 To: Subject: (DEFIS); (DEFIS); (DEFIS); (DEFIS); (DEFIS) Meeting with RTX on Chemicals/REACH (DEFIS); Dear colleagues, Today I had a meeting with the US company RTX who had asked for a meeting to inform us about REACH and its implications for the defence industry. From RTX participated and RTX is a US company in the aerospace sector, with the subsidiaries Raytheon, Rockwell Collins and Pratt&Whitner. The company has approximately 185.000 employees, explained the importance of PFAS for the ASD sector, especially considering the long lifecycles and the complex and time-consuming procedures for certification of new components, which is consistent with what the EU defence industry have remarked. also described the situation in US, where there federal level (Environmental Protection Agency, EPA) is currently requesting data from the industry, in order to form an opinion whether use of PFAS should be banned and/or restricted on federal level. Meanwhile, several states have decided to move faster, and have introduced bans/restrictions on state level. RTX (and other ASD companies) are therefore working to inform the states about implications of PFAS ban/restrictions. It should be noted that the DoD has no influence over the decisions of the states, so a ban in one state where there is a strong defence industrial base (which there is in most states) could have severe consequences for the US DoD supply chain. Best regards
