The shortage of pig lead most of the year reduced us from six or seven-day to five-day per woex operations with only one pair of Barton pots running much of the time. This was due in part to our customers having furnished us with some 2000 tons less lead than in 1947. 2. Our Oil operations were restricted by inadequate oil supplies during much of the year. 3. Lead Chemic; Is were added during the year, thus helping to increase our profits and build for- the future. 4,, Although our expressed desire a year ago to manufacture 45X con tinuously during 1948 was not realised, it lc.Jcs more likely of attainment, in 1949* especially if our own Paint Plants start using it in the Dutch Boy Blended Paint. ^ 5. Our Metal Department made substantial progress in many categories during the year, as indiea ted by the departmental earnings. 6. It is with regret that we record the retirement of our Vice-Presi dent, S. Drench Reeves, and cur Superintendent, F. W. Eckfeldt. It is extremely gratifying to add that uv. Levin as General Super intendent is discharging his new responsibility very creditably. 7. On October 25, 1948 we moved our offices to our new modern 6000 square feet office building at 2607 Last Cumberland Street. To the gratification of all concerned, we found that in spite of .moving away from the centre of the city, practically everyone pre fers the new building to the old quarters in the Widener Building. The arrangement in the new building is, we believe, much better and in the main the people 'who work most closely together are lo cated near one another, ill accounting work will very shortljr be done in the new office and our Traffic people will shortly be" lo- cated. in the factory office building so as to afford greater efficiency and economy of operations in both cases. It should be noted that the move to the plant is resulting in other .onomies. .gain we note that we enjoy a maximum of cooperation and friendly re lationship with our many friends in the General Office who are inter red in our problems. January, 1949 represented a very good start for the year and was due in the main to availability of ell of the pig lead and linseed oil we could use, in spite of the fact fnat some customers had already started to curtail their buying to reduce their inventories. However* there are a few bright spots* namely that Lead Chemical orders appear to be picking up, metal orders and shipments are holding up well, and National Battery Company continues to take- peak tonnage of YA Litharge at both Trenton and Depew.
