3
GLASS SECTION REPORT (contd.)
The draft of the Proposed Federal Specification for Duct Liners was reviewed. The draft is to be rewritten to includo requirements contained in the duct liner specification written by the Prefabricated Duct Committee.
Commercial Standards CS-105 and CS-117 were reviewed and found out of date and no longer serving a useful purpose. The manufacturers will be polled on the subject of rescinding these Standards.
Since the hlarch S meeting the draft of MIL-I-742A waz approved and forwarded to the Bureau of Ships for consideration. The 3ureau has submitted their revised specification for NIMA review. Thi3 revision includes mest, but not all of the Committees suggested changes. The members are to send com ments to Mr. Barnhart for forwarding to the Bureau.
This specification brought the subject of fiber diameter in specifications, which has previously received considerable attention in connection with MILI-742A as well as MIL-I-22023 and 22344. Consideration was given to asking the agencies to delete the requirement. The manufacturers are to be polled on the subject.
In the meantime there is a need for standards for measuring fiber diameter. The Bureau of Standards is to be asked if it is feasbilo for them to establish such standards based on the Microaaire method.
The test project at Willard State Hoppital has been in service 6 months and is to be inspected on October 11 by Mr* Cloke, Chief Mech. Engr. NYDPW, Members cf the Glass Section of the T & R Committee will be present. Mr. Cloke has indicated that satisfactory performance for the 6 months period will justify reinstatement of glass fiber insulations in the State specifications.
We have been, advised that the Economic Thickness (Cold) Study is in its final stages cf completion and should be ready about November 15. Some test cases indicate that condensation thicknesses will exceed economic thicknesses for the majority cf applications.
The committee on the method of presenting economic thickness has found that conditions fitting the process industries cannot be selected from the present elevated temperature manual. This stems from the first meeting with Union Carbide and University of W Virginia personnel when the NEMA representatives made the point that the build in cost factors relating to main tenance, and particularly return and investment, would not be universally acceptable. MIMA asked for sample calculations covering such items not detailed in the manual as written. These were promised but never supplied as such. Wo finally managed to get sufficient information from Prof. Cather to change the B or insulation cost factors as required. The committee will make further recommendations.
