Box 231 San Pedro, CA 90733 Manager /AtcJo/C -S Dear Mr. McElhill: Enclosed is a copy of the report for the monitoring of airborne asbestos particles at the Los Angeles Shipyard. The monitoring was conducted on May 22, 1974, in accordance with Section 5208 of the General Industry Safety Orders and OSHA standards (29CFR 1910.93a Asbestos). With the exception of one sample taken aboard ship, all samples .indicate compliance wft-h hnf-h the eight-hour and ceiling or short-time concentrations allowed by OSHA. One sample taken aboard ship indicates compliance with the eight-hour limitations established by OSHA.. However, this sample exceeded the allowable concentrations established for ceiling or short-time exposures. This problem can probably be corrected by the use of shrouds or shields connecting the drill and skill saw directly to a high suction vacuum. In six months when additional monitoring is required it would be advisable to attach a portable sampling.unit to the clothing of your employees and record the actual levels encountered during the entire eight hour working day. We have such a device should it be desired. You and your staff should be congratulated on the degree cf control achieved during the past six months. With the use of additional control aboard ship - ^ your facility will be in compliance with the current OSHA standards dealing with asbestos.
