(... we talked money, reporting that top Republicans and Democrats on the House appropriations panel overseeing EPA's budget are sharply criticizing the Trump administration's fiscal year 2018 proposal, suggesting that Congress is unlikely to adopt many of its steep proposed cuts.
Our daily news roundup previewed the lawmakers' concerns over the proposed $2.6 billion cut to the agency, which represents a 31 percent reduction.
Speaking of Congress, House appropriations interior subcommittee Chairman Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA) is signaling strong concerns if the Trump EPA were to attempt to rescind California's longstanding authority to enforce its own vehicle emissions standards.
{In personnel news, Arizona's former top environment official Henry Darwin will soon join EPA as assistant deputy administrator, a position that does not require Senate confirmation - and his record as a state official shows support for flexible ways to comply with federal environmental programs, deferring to states, and opposition to climate rules.
And over at the Energy Department, officials are closing a small office focused on international climate collaboration - a move that could complicate the United States' ability to develop and advance clean energy technologies in coordination with other countries.
