Our Asbestos consumption this year is averaging I 88m lbs. per month verses the 1969 average of I 23H lbs. per month. This unexpected increased in consumption has caused a serious reduction in our inventory and is the reason we have failed to I'.ock-plle 25 tons on the patio. I intend to immediately increase my ordering levels to anticipate continued usage at a 190M per month rate. This means that our in-plant storage requirements will increase as follows:
Old Requ i remerjts
Min 75M lbs. Max 120m lbs.
New Requirements
Min 95M lbs. Max ISOM lbs.
This is exclusive of the 50rt lb. patio supply.

Please see the attached letter from Gerry Morgan of North American Asbestos. Also the 2-24-71 Memo from Bill Brenner from which it appears that we shall be using - in the Cleveland plant alone - around 1200 tons this year.
I called Gerry Morgan today to advise him of our increased consumption of Amosite Asbestos, and learned that he is leaving for England tomorrow. The purpose appears to be to make a pitch for increased shipments to the U.S.A., and he tells me that the mines are oversold for this year.
In view of this, I am sure that you will want to review the^ situation regarding grade S44, as described in Miles Macnair1s
fcj--.gr of October 7. Despite the unfavorable Lab report (M-4924) it was recently necessary for us to take a truckload;
this material in order to keep the plant going.
' >_j LJ A-'-' .
In view of Bill Brenner's forecasting approximately 1200 tons for the Cleveland plant alone (fchiifr. ijPyour projection of 800
tons for Cleveland and Chicago combined) it will no doubt be necessary for us to use every grade we can, and for that reason I am sure that you will want to see whether official approval can now be given to the S44 grade, although I understand from Gerry Morgan that this will not be available until around Septembe;

Dear Frank,
This is in reply to your letter of February 18, pertaining to the availability of'Grade S44 Amosite.
We have been tentatively advised of the possibility of S44 becoming 1" available during the last half of 1971. Regretfully, however, it will be in rather short supply and should it be made available to us it would appear, at this point, that this grade would perhaps be a substitute for Grade S33/65. In other words it would be used to reduce the pressure on the S33 group rather than for new market development.
At the moment the port price for S44 is $205 per metric ton, f. o. b. vessel as opposed to $227 for S33/65.
As previously advised I expect to be in London in early March to further explore the availability of Amosite. We shall continue to keep you advised to the best of our ability.
Best personal regards.
Sincerely yours,
NORTH AMERICAN ASBESTOS CORPORATION

Dear Ted,
Thm prioe of Anoslte Asbestos ex Cape Asbestos Limited will be
going up In 1971 by about 5% on F.O.B. prices ex South Africa. This Is bound to be reflected In your purchasing prloes free North Aeeriosn Asbeston for S.33/65.
They' are now Introducing a new grade* Sj^jL^ahlch has a slighting,
shorter flbr^lengtfr but which is otherwise inSntioal, and
'
WVnrWTSITPioe per short ton of 98.0 RAND (cf new price of S.33/65 ""
108.9 RAND). If this grade is suitable for your production* there should
be a 'significant price saving. We know that this grade Is currently also
being offered to Ferro Siglneerlng and FMF.
We have arranged with Cape Asbestos to send you 1 ton of 5.44 Free of Charge* addressed for your attention. I feel it la very such In your
Interest to evaluate this In Frofax 31 and Proflex* being the largest user of Asbestos In the group, though I as naturally very Interested In receiving the results of eny Investigations you carry out for tranaalaslon to other companies In the group.
I will send you the technical data sheets whan I get then - we will also be doing sons comparative tests ourselves on a laboratory scale, but I feel these results will be of less relevance than a production sseeasaent of the sort you can undertake.
Looking forward to seeing you at the and of the nonth.
With best wishes
