Pierrard wrote Dr. David Weil of your staff requesting that Du Pont be included in any workshops or other meetings conducted for the purpose of resolving the questions on the blood lead-hypertension issue which were raised at the May CASAC meeting. You will recall that substantial reservations were voiced by some CASAC members and consultants regarding the blood leadhypertension association. The committee's consultant in statistics, Professor Royall, specifically noted, "The material that Du Pont circulated yesterday.... is interesting and may be relevant." (Transcript, May 14, 1985, p. 57.) He went on to say in reference to Du Pont's analysis, "...There are some interesting points here and some serious issues that really need to be addressed." (Transcript, May 14, 1985, p. 58.) After two subsequent exchanges between Drs. Schwartz and Royall on Du Pont's comments, substantive questions raised on the existence of the blood level-blood pressure relationship remained unresolved. In a phone conversation with Dr. Royall on June 5, C. G. Pfeifer (who performed Du Pont's statistical analysis but was unable to attend the CASAC meeting) offered clarification on Du Pont's analyses and assistance on providinq other analyses desired. Dr. Royall told C. G. Pfeifer that he was waiting for EPA to take this initiative and contact him regarding resolution of the issues. We have heard nothing from your office on this matter. Because the blood pressure-hypertension association presumably will be addressed again in the addendum to the Lead Criteria Document, TEH 0412678 2 November 27, 1985 Dr. Lester D. Grant which ECAO will present at the CASAC meeting early in 1986, we are now repeating our earlier request to be included in the substantive review of this issue. Very truly yours.
