Dyer, S afety Engineer, was performed o f employe exposures t o a irb o rn e asb esto s f ib e r s . The purpose was to re -stu d y a sb esto s-u se a re a s and q u a n tify exposures o f th o se employes who ro u tin e ly handle a s b e s to s c o n ta in in g m a te ria ls , p e r OSHA re g u la tio n 29 CFR 1910.1001. Only a sb esto s r e s u lts are d e ta ile d in t h is rep o rt. Lead exposures w ill be reported a t a la te r d a te . FINDINGS A sbestos f ib e r exposures a t Kentucky Truck P lan t are confined to aseembly areas where new brake lin in g s and c lu tc h p la te s a re i n s t a ll e d . In some in sta n c e s , th e in s ta lla tio n of those p a rts involves an abrading actio n th a t can p o te n tia lly g en erate a irb o rn e f i b e r s . Mainly, employe b reathing tones can be contaminated by the rele ase o f fib e r s th a t have accumulated in the shipping cartons used for p a r t s to ra g e . The e x ta n t o f employs exposure to a sb esto s i s dependent on many f a c t o r s in c lu d in g p e rs o n a l work p r a c tic e s and th e amount o f d u st in th e s e c a rto n s. Results from th is study, as shown on tbs attached table, demonstrate the presence of airborne fibers within the employe breathing zones but at airborne concen trations, 1) below the 0SH1 permissible occupational exposure limit (PEL) of 2 fibers, longer then 5Jim, per cubic centimeter of breathing zone air (f/cc) and, 2) below the medical action level of 0.1 f/co.
