Dear Mr. Drislane: Confirming our conversation of last week you will hold open an order for the new F.M.S.I. data books for World Best os, without obligation, until such time as you must issue the order to the printer. At that time you will call us for our requirements and a firm purchase order.
As explained, this action is necessary due to the fact the sale of World Bestos Conpany to Royal Industries has not been fully consummated as yet; however, we are expecting it to be finalized during this month.
I checked with Mr. W. M. Sleeth this morning as to the requirements for 1975 supplements to the 197U brake shoe identification catalog, and he advised they will order from their Danville, Kentucky location a quantity sufficient for the future needs of the World Bestos Division.
Yours very truly.

Dear Mr. May:
Thank you for your letter of January 6, 1975. While I had heard rumors that World Bestos would be giving up the friction materials businsss, I was hoping that this would not be so. The Institute v/i 11 be losing a long time member. Delegates from World Bestos, including Messrs. Nanfeldt, Riley and Weber served as Officers and/or Directors of the Institute. We will miss this participation by World Bestos.
In one area, I do have a difficulty, since (per Article IX, Section 5 of our Constitution) a resignation may be made "at any time upon payment of its annual fees for the current fiscal year and all rights to participate shall cease as of that date." The World Bestos annual fee for 1974-75 fiscal year is *2,350. #1,175 was paid in July 1974, and the second half of the fee was billed as of January 1, 1975. With payment of the second half of the annual fee, your resigna tion could take effect.
However, as World Bestos v/ould be paid up till June 30, 1975. it might be better to have the resignation take effect June 30. In this way your customers would continue to be authorized to use the copyrighted FT;"SI Numbers, and bulletins and Catalogs would be available during this interim period.
I personally wish to express my thanks to you and Remy Alleman for the World Bestos participation in the Institute. I wish you both the very best. If there are any questions, please give me a call.
Sincerely,

Subject: Purchase Order C-020-A1-C3D
Dear Mr. Wallace:
I have a problem on subject Purchase Order. It was received after I had committed -- quantities to the printer. As soon as copies were off the press, I asked for a count and it turns out there is not sufficient overrun to fill this order.
Noticing the nWMSK on the Order, I called Mr. Sleeth and asked if I could send 750 copies rather than 1,000. He indicated this was satisfactory. Also, as this order came in after my committment to the Printer, the seller will be Friction Materials Standards Institute (rather than Twaddle Litho Company).
I have marked up a copy of your order with these changes. I would expect the 750 copies to be shipped via Truck from St. Clair Shores sometime next week.
I need no change notice and will handle it as indicated above. When this shipment is complete, the Friction Materials Standards Institute will invoice you.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Drislane:
I would like to find out if you have information concerning the interchangeability of the 7013D-50 and the 7013D-92 used on I.H.C.
The only difference I can see is that the 7013D-92 outer plate is .032 longer than the D-50 outer plate. Inner plates on both are identical as far as I can determine.
In reality, I don't see any difficulties with installation but can not be certain as to their interchangeability.

Subject: 7013-D-50 versus 7013-D-92
Dear Mr. Fouche:
As concerns the interchangeability of the D-50 and D-92 shoes, I will have to switch the problem over to the inner plate.
The outer D-50 and D-92 are identical. The inner D-92 is .032 longer then the inner D-50 shoe. Length D-50 Inner 6-7/32
D-92 Inner 6-1/4
As regards Interchangeability, it appears that some people in the field are using D-50 shoes to service these applications. Technically, they are not interchangeable.
I have discussed this with engineers at the original equipment brake source and they recommend against the use of the D-50 Inner for D-92 Inner. However, they do understand that replacements are being made using the D-50 Inner.
The choice of using D-50 Inner for the D-92 Inner is up to you.

It appears in the 1968 Book, the 1970 Book and the 1972 Book. It would have appeared in the 1974 Book if you had not called it to our attention. Our major control over errors, and source for correction, is our Membership. A correction will appear in a future Bulletin. Thank you.
As regards the rivet holes, they go as follows:
No holes (for bonding)
294, 336
5 Rows (27-40', 270-40', 27-40' 27~40' spacing) -10 rivet holes
324
7 Rows, 3-1-3 pattern (13-50\ 13-50', 270-40', 27-40', 13-50', 13-50' spacing)- 14 rivet holes
125, 125R, 147R 148, 157R, 185 265, 274, 278

Dear Mr. Drislane,
There appears to be some contradiction between what is stated in Shoe Bulletins #66 and 67.
Bulletin 66 states that shoe assignments from D-90-D-93 are on reserve for Ford applications, however. Bulletin 67 states that Shoe D-92 is for an International Harvester Coiporation application* Gould this have been an oversight? Or has something else happened?

Dear Mr. Flockhart:
You are correct that there Is a contradiction between Shoe Bulletins #66 and #67.
In Bulletin #66 I advised that Shoes D-90 to D-93 had been reserved for Ford Motor new shoes. That was what I had been told by Bendlx for whom I had reserved, the numbers. However, Bendlx used only D-90 and D-91 for Ford, D-92 for IHC, and released D-93 back to the Institute which I am now using for the 1974 Imperial rears.
While I don't see any problem here, I should not have said that they were reserved for Ford.

Dear Mr. Drislanes
Would you please clarify for me the proper set number for the following application. The 1973 FMSI (Red) Data Book calls for the use of set number 797-*D59 for the 1971-72 GT Saloon and Saloon, while the 1973 FMSI Shoe Identification supplement to the Blue Book shows set 719-D-2 to be used on Capri 1971-72 1600GT and 2000GT (U.S. market only).
What I would like to determine is, will the 719-D-2 disc set fit the 1971-72 Capri sold in the U.S. market.

Dear Mr. Fouche:
This is to refer to your letter of October 10, 1973 concerning the Ford Capri listings.
The difficulty with the Capri listing has been with me since the first day Ford manufactured a Capri. To get directly to the point, the correct material for the Capri is 797-D-59. However, you are correct that I mistakenly have 719-D-2 in the Shoe Catalog. The original information I had indicated that 719-D-2 will fit and can be used on these Capris. However, the correct material from an original equipment viewpoint is that which is shown by 797-D-59. So, the correct answer is that 797-D-59 is used. However, from all information I have, 719-D-2 will fit these Capris.
I am attaching a preliminary copy of a Data Book Bulletin that is to be issued later this month. You will see on this Bulletin a clarifi cation for the Capri. No other data in this Bulletin is considered final until a release is made on October 30.

Dear Mr. Flockhart:
This pertains to your letter of July 18, 1973 concerning some cross-reference Information on several Ford part numbers, and some lining information on some Ford vehicles.
I have checked all of these Ford part numbers against my master list of cross-references and am unable to tie in any of them. Incidentally, one of the problems is that these numbers with the Z suffix are kit numbers and we do not ordinarily receive cross reference information on kits.
As regards the 1970-72 Ford Truck models, I am not able to cross-over any of the units on the list. As you might note in our Data Book, we have no Ford Truck K Series. It may be that these K. Series Fords are vehicles manufactured in South or Central America or Europe. I do not have the necessary Information to tie in our part numbers into these vehicles.

2. ARE BACKING PLATES D5OA INNER AND D5OA OUTER USED NOW FOR BOTH 788 AND 7OI3A ?
3. IN CHECKING THE PRINTS FOR 788 OUTER AND 7OI3A OUTER
THEY APPEAR TO BE IDENTICAL. CAN YOU CONFIRM THIS ?

Hr. Jack Grunden The World Bestos Company* Division of Ths Firestone Tire & Rubber Company New Castle* Indiana #47362
Dear Mr* Grunden:
This concerns your letter of lay 31* 1973 concerning FMS#788 and FM8#7013-A.
(1) The fldimensional and drill pattern changes11 wade in #788 are what gave us #7013-A. (Any significant dimensional change causes a new number to be issued - as was the case when the #788 inner pad was changed dimen sionally* which triggered issue of the new number FMS#7013-A.) We could not have a dimensional change and still call it #788.
(2) We do not assign numeric or alpha suffix to a shoe. (In other words we don't have D50A - we have D-50 only). It is current Institute practice to assign a new show number to a dimensionally new shoe plate), we do not change a shoe number or add a suffix when the drilling pattern changed - as was the case when #7013A inner followed issue of #788 inner. By Institute practice it is still I0 shoe even though the drill pattern changed:
1st Issue 2nd Issue
788 using D-50 shoe 7013A using D-50 shoe
If show suppliers wish to use suffix A (such as D-50A) to indicate the new drilling* that is fine by us* but at this time we do not issue a suffix on shoes to indicate drilling changes.
(3) Yeas. 788 outer and 7013A outer are identical.
(4) Essentially yes to question 4. The changes that were made in 788 inner became 7013A inner.
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Flockhart:
While I believe we both have the same and latest drawings for FMS #2073, I'm sending these prints to be sure--in line with the last paragraph of your January 30, 1973 letter,
FMS Ho, 2073 short 2073 long
Drawing 3761016 3761018
Length 9-1/2
12
Degrees arc (approx.) 98 - 40* 124
Allowing for my approximate (slide rule) lengths I believe the problem here is that we list our lengths In the Data Book as "long arc length"--outside or extreme arc length after application to shoes, but not including loss of length foem chamfer, if used. The dimensions you have tefeerad to on the prints are "measured on inside surface".
On many of these prints we have to scrounge for them. The prints attached are the best we could get for this application. This is not a print that shows dimensions readily. The spacing between rivet rows is 22.

take FMS #2154T (1-1/2" wide on 1-1/2" shoes, rather than FMS #2145's 1-3/8" wide on 1-1/2" shoes). Actually, FMS #2154T would retrofit the earlier Pinto #2145T, #2145AT.
