His remarks covered structural integrity, deg-oe o* combustion, surface burning characteristics, smoke potert:al and con trol, containment and experiments with plastics and smoke. His remark were supported by a movie of tne Sao Paulo, Brazil high-rise fire. It was agreed, when possible to include the data in other popular current publica tions. It was requested that the Promotional Committee, wno has ultimate responsibility for the pub 1ications , allow the Technical Committee to review them for technical accuracy, as they are indi vidually considered for revision. ITEM 11-62-73 STANDARD EQR DAMAGE RESISTANT VAILS The sense of this item was considered under Item 11-37 * Standards for Durability. COMMITTEE ACTION: A motion was made, seconded and cs-ried to remove tnis item from ;ne agenda. iTEk 11-63-73 ASBESTOS " I SEP IN JOINT COMPOUND It had been recommended that the Association begin an in vestigative program to determine the extend of hazards to healtn and safety of use of asbestos in joint compounds, as a result of sanoinn and dry mixing operations. OSHA regulations are Strict concerning asbestos and there could be problems within the gypsum industry as a result of inhalation of asoestos fibers present in dust environments. The committee proposed the following initial considerations: 1. The member companies should pool information they r.ave c* the subj ect. 2. It is necessary to determine ranges of hazards. 3. The staff is to develop a list of testing agencies Qual ified to conduct tests of cust environments uontaining asbestos, determine estimated costs of test pregrems, and report on methods used. A. The Chairman is to include this Subject in his rrpnrt to the membership and reauest funds from the Bo*rd of 0 rectors for a standard industry test program. /j JU'iv i - 13 - L:_> L, cc c; 5. Request that the Safety Committee recommend what is neeoec to protect the applicator working in these conditions. It ws resorted that contractor organizations had recuested guidance from the Association on tne problem. The possibility of drafting an ASTM standard on join; treatment compound was discussec but no recommendation was made. An opinion was expressed that asbestos may not be an ingredient in joint compound within tne next three years. It was further speculated that contractor groups sucn as GDCI and iaWCC may wish to participate financially in the develop ment of an industry safety program for hazardous dust protection. Tne Technical Committee too* a position against the endorsement of any product or tool by any manu facturer outside the Association in any Association literature. Questions relating to this subject rightfully belong to the Aoard oe Directors and legal counsel. COMMITTEE ACTION; A motion was made, seconded and carried to remove this item from the agenoa. b) Record Vaults. A request was attached to the agenda fro" p1anning/Desicn Consultants for data reaarcing vault construction for record storage. UL has such data anq the committee recommenced the inouiry be directed to UL for answer. c) Specification for application of finish materials outsice of 55 to 70F. A question was brougnt that ANSI AS7. 1 should clearU state temperature application limitations for materials sucn as jo'rt treatment.
