Mr. Jerome H. Ileckman Keller & Heckman 1712 N. Street, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20036 Dear Mr. Heckman: Dave Wolfe of USI, has informed me that questions were raised during your recent SPI Meeting concerning the status of the returnable plastic milk container in Oregon. Evidently, a discussion was prompted by an article appearing in the March issue of FDA Papers. Early this year, USI POLYTRIP Systems met with Oregon State Health Officials, representatives of the FDA and Oregon State University to discuss problems encountered in Oregon. Twentythree complaints had been received during 1970 on the return able plastic container, thirteen of which were due to odor in the container or the taste of the milk. Upon review, we found several dairies vdiich were not calling for service when they encountered instrument problems, and thus were packaging with out benefit of a contamination detector which is designed specifically to alleviate this type of problem. As a result of the meeting, our POLYTRIP Service Department increased its surveillance of dairies packaging with the returnable plastic milk container, and Oregon State Health authorities emphasized the importance of a contamination detector thru several releases to the dairy industry.
