Hi Bill,
Hope all is well. Looks like we are speaking on the same panel tomorrow, and AHRI plans to ask us about Energy Star. Obviously, as we discussed a couple of weeks ago, EPA and DOE work closely on the program and we want to see that continue. For your awareness, I've attached my discussion points and pasted my Energy Star answer below:
Q: What's your view on recent efforts to move all or portions of the Energy Star program to the Department of Energy? And maybe we should ask Alex what his view is as well....
A: EPA and DOE work closely on Energy Star and we appreciate that collaboration. DOE has acknowledged that there are synergies between the standard setting of the appliance and equipment standards program and setting levels for appliance models to earn the Energy Star designation. This is why DOE and EPA historically have had an interagency agreement, known as a Memorandum of Understanding, assigning roles and responsibilities under the program. DOE and EPA have the ability to revisit that agreement to determine if a different assignment of roles and responsibilities may allow the program to work better. Our staffs continue to work closely to make sure Energy Star is a successful program.
Please let me know if you have any feedback or want to discuss. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
Best,
Alex Fitzsimmons Chief of Staff and Senior Advisor Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy U.S. Department of Energy
