Liidcodc, was rest ashed to address tha meeting on legal developments that r.Aght be of interest to members, lir. Haddock spoke on the continuing efforts of the courts and congress to reconcile the ` "hard" and "soft" approaches to competition set forth in the Sherman and original Clayton Act on one hand and the noblnson-Patuan act and Fair Trade Laws on the other. He also discussed new developments in the Federal Trade Ccemission1 s approach to Trade Practico conferences, 6. The first cownittee report was presented by hr. 0, F.. Koines for the Air Hygiene Committee. The report covered the work of this cooiAttee In ses sion on October 6th, at uliich time tha reyilar eoi-xiittee members met with Doctor representatives of the several ..leader companies. The discussions pursued during the course of this session covered a wide range of subjects concerned with tha relationship between asbestosis and diseases of tha heart and the respiratory system. The full tert of the report is attached as a part of the liinutes of this meeting. - On the basis of the discussions 'indertaken during these eomnittce ses sions, two proposals for action were recowcended for consideration at the General meeting. The first proposal was in the form of a recommendation by Dr. Theodos suggesting that the Individual companies voluntarily participate in a program of study to be 'uidertakcn by Dr. Theodoe which would provide ease histories related to the relationslAp of asbestosis to ailments or diseases of the heart. Such a study would be a long range program wherein each company would provide suitable employee patients for study and observa tion by Dr. Theodos at a clinic or hospital in Philadelphia, i'he results of these studies, it is felt, would provide basic data upon which a better understanding of tha relationship between asbestosis and heart ailments. Tha proposed program in no way would Involve tha financial support or re sponsibilities of tha Asbestos Textile Institute but all such responsibili ties will be voluntarily borne by the companies concerned and tha individuals selected for such observations. Following a discussion of this proposal. It was moved by G. S. Ptbel, seconded by 0. V/. tiarshall and unanimously agreed that tha individual members give full support to the program. Tha second program proposed for action concerned the establishment of a study designed to determine tha relationship, if any, between asbestosis and 1""g cancer. It is proposed that rich an investigation be carried out using white rats as tha subjects for study. The program as presented was in a very general form and the cost of carrying on such an investigation was not suggested. Following a discussion of this latter proposal it was sug gested that the Air Hygiene Committee reconsider the subject and prepare a ora specific program for consideration at the next meeting.
