The EPA, DWQ, and MS4 performed a joint inspection at this facility. The inspection was announced approximately one week prior to the inspection, to coordinate logistics for the inspection and to ensure that appropriate personnel would be available. The EPA inspectors along with DWQ and the MS4 met with Mark Richins, Branch Manager of Contempo/Crossville Studios Slab Gallery. EPA inspector, Stephanie Meyers, presented her credentials and had an opening conference to explain the purpose of the inspection. The inspectors began by going through a series of checklist questions with the facility representatives. Once complete, the inspectors proceeded to inspect the facility and asked questions to the facility representative to help the inspectors evaluate the need for industrial stormwater permit coverage. Throughout the inspection, the inspectors noted their observations in a checklist. Photographs taken during the inspection are included in the attached photo log. Contempo/Crossville Studios Slab Gallery is located at 2885 S 300 W in Salt Lake City, Utah. The facility is a slab gallery with galleries located across the nation. The facility is an importer of quartz, granite, porcelain, and other natural and manmade stone slabs for the intermountain region. The slabs are shipped to this location and stored on-site until their trucks distribute them to other Page 2 of 3 NPDES Inspection Report - Stormwater Industrial Inspection Narrative and Site Description locations and consumers. A facility representative stated that this location does not perform fabrication, cutting, or polishing. This location is exclusively for wholesale distribution and storage. Storage occurs primarily indoors with some overflow product stored outside on a paved lot. A facility representative indicated that forklifts are used to transport product around the facility and three trucks are used to distribute the final product. Propane gas cans are stored indoors on-site for forklift operations, but fueling and maintenance for the trucks occurs off-site. Finished products are then distributed and sold within the State of Utah and the surrounding intermountain area. After the opening conference, inspectors walked the facility and first observed the primary indoor storage location for the wholesale slabs. The inspectors then walked the perimeter of the outside overflow lot where supplementary slabs are stored on a paved lot (photo 30). The east edge of the facility is unpaved but there is no slab storage occurring on this portion of the lot. After the inspection of the facility, the inspectors returned to the main office and held a closing conference with Mark Richins where they discussed observations. Contempo/Crossville Studios Slab Gallery operates under Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) code 5031-31, which encompasses the wholesale distribution of counter tops made from materials such as granite, marble, quarts, and laminate. SIC code 5031-31 does not fall within an industrial sector requiring coverage under the Multi-Sector General Permit (MSGP) for Storm Water Discharges Associated with Industrial Activities. At this time, MSGP coverage is not required for Contempo/Crossville Studios Slab Gallery, and no further response from the facility is needed. Page 3 of 3
