In today's organization, the Solvents and Coatings Material Division and the Specialty Chemicals Division use vinyl chloride as a raw material in some of their products. As regards the re-analyses of the 1972 data, I'm not sure what is meant. The committee appeared to want the following: 1. Confirmation of the status of 815 individuals who on review by the plants were reclassified as non-exposed (UCC has 381 of these). 2. A check of the 707 persons shown as deceased in the original study to confirm their exposure status (UCC will have about 200 of these). Admittedly the more the data is massaged, the better the quality but further work on the 815 reclassified as non-exp sed would tilt the results unless all the 9255 persons were confirmed. Your group has checked UCC's portion (1492) thoroughly and I think the committee should be told that we will do no further work on these records. The failure to check the exposure status of the 707 deceased persons was an error on the-committee's part that should be corrected to reduce bias. Vinyl Chloride Epidemiology Study Dear Nickt A representative of our Epidemiology Department attended the last CHA/Vinyl Chloride Epidemiology Study Meeting in Washington, D.C. As you may Know, the panel decided at that time to embark upon Phase II of the Epidemiology study which will involve analysis of the Vinyl Chloride Cohort. It was interesting to learn that other companies besides Onion Carbide had some difficulty verifying that persons included in the original study were truly exposed based on work history records. As a result of this finding, the committee decided to re-analyxe the 1972 data using only those persons believed to be exposed to vinyl chloride according to work history records in existence today. (I am not sure I agree with this approach -- it may lead to highly biased results.) My purpose in writing to you is to notify you that the decision for Onion Carbide to participate in this study will involve expenditures of time, effort and perhaps computer funds from this department. Before proceeding with any work, I would like clarification of what division(s) will be served and who will pay for costs.
