Dear Doc;- As you perhaps know, there was a defective electrical refrigerat ing machine that went had in a Danbury, Conn, apartment house. They had a gas supposedly made up of ethyl chloride and methyl bromide. Two people were killed and one became seriously ill. I am telling you the above as a preface to the following. In talking with Hr. Biechler about the possibilities of our running some preliminary psychology tests on sulphur dioxide which we are using in our machines, the point being that in a very nauseating gas like sulphur dioxide the possibility of awakening the people in the case of a slight leak, which was the case in the above accident, would be a safeguard, whereas an anaesthetic such as ethyl chloride would not give such warning. In other words, we would like to discuss -with you the possibility of undertaking some work in connection with the gases used in refrigerating machines, so as to get a somewhat intelligent background in case of the formation of-codes,' which is bound to cone in the next few years. The importance of having the right kind of information is very necessary in forming of sensible, codes. Understand we do not want to do anything in the Prigidaire business that is hazardous, but we do not want to put a handicap on the business simply because of the lack of the right kind of information. 'He xyould like to have the same sort of information relative to these refrigerants that we had in our ethyl gas, because our experimental work formed the basis of the proper work out and marketing of this product. If the opportunity presents itself, I think it would be a good thing if you would come to Dayton and discuss this matter with Hr.
