August 23, 19A3 Mr. H. A. Mack. Dear H arry At your req u est, I called on Mr. and Mrs. P.. H. Adams, 1617 Benson Drive, Dayton, Ohio. Through Mr. Margraf, D ivision Manager of th e Dayton o ffic e of Standard O il Company, who i s a personal frie n d o f Mr. & Mrs. Adams, i t was learned th a t t h e ir son had been sta tio n e d fo r some three months in North A frica. During about a month of th a t tim e, he had been handling both aviation and motor E thyl gasoline f o r continued long periods of time each working day. The boy developed a p a r t i a l p a ra ly sis in both legs and the w rist and fin g e rs of the l e f t hand. He i s now in th e hospi t a l a t White. Sulphur Springs, West V irg in ia. His parents thought th a t possibly he had absorbed enough lead from, th e gasoline to cause o r co n tri bute to h is condition#, In ta lk in g to Mr. and Mrs. Adams, I found them highly in te llig e n t and sensible people. I explained to them the reason fo r my c a ll -- th a t i s , i t was a request of Mr. Margraf -- and I f e e l th a t a fte r giving them th e background of Ethyl f lu id as I know i t and th e manner in which i t i s handled, th ey are now convinced beyond any question of a doubt th a t t h e ir so n 's condition could not possibly have been caused by th e hand ling of the gasoline. They have ju s t returned from a v i s i t to White Sulphur, where they spent a week. During th e week, they said th a t th e re was g, -s.marked improvement in the boy's condition - - in f a c t , since being in th is h o sp ita l, a period of ju s t one month, his condition has improved to such an extent th a t he i s now able to walk with the use of a cane and th e p araly sis in his w rist and fin g ers has e n tire ly disappeared. They discussed h is case with Col. C. M. Beck, who is head of th e h o sp ita l i t White Sulphur, and from what they to ld me th a t Col. Beck had imparted to them, i t i s q uite evident th a t the boy's condition was caused p rin c ip a lly by vitam in deficiency, as I know they have been giving him B~1 e x tra ct and Col.
