ABDOO169883 (conoco) GENERAL INFORMATION A, History The Aberdeen, Mississippi Plant was built in 1963, by the Thompson-Apex Company, a major producer of polyvinyl chloride with headquarters in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, The'Thompson-Apex Company was a privately owned company producing PVC resin, vinyl compounds, plasticizers, phthalic anhydride, lauryl peroxide and processed rubber for tire manufacturers. During 1964, Continental Oil purchased Thompson-Apex from the Fain family. It continued to operate under the Thompson-Apex name until the . fall of 1968. The local name was Monroe Manufacturing. Then as a result of a ruling by the Justice Department, Continental Oil sold all of the Thompson-Apex Company except the Aberdeen, Miss issippi Plant. The Fain family bought the Pawtucket, Rhode Island Compound and Plasticizer Plants and operate it under the name of Teknor Apex. Olin Matheson bought the PVC resin plant at Assonet, Massachusetts, and operate it under the name Thompson Plastics. Subsequent to the 1968 ruling, the plant functioned as part of Conoco's Plastics Division with headquarters in Wilton, Conn ecticut. A reorganization in 1972 brought the plant into the Conoco Chemicals Division. * Production has increased continually since the ground breaking in August, 1962. The first construction included the main'ware house, Hose Department, Lab and Office areas. In 1965 a new reactor plant which included a refrigerated cooling water system and dryer building doubled the PVC resin production. In 1966 a warehouse addition doubled the warehouse area. July, 1968 marked the start up of another compound line which doubled compound capabilities. Another reactor plant started up August, 1969. Included in this expansion was a doubling of the boiler and refrigeration capabilities. This new plant more than tripled the PVC resin production. At the same time two new prod ucts were added which required even more expansion. These were Dry Blend and Plastisol. July, 1970 was start up date of the new compound production line which more than doubled the capacity of the other two com pound lines. B. Physical Assets The plant is located on a 123 acre plot within the city limits of Aberdeen, Mississippi. Transportation facilities include rail road and trucking. Approximately 40 acres are currently utilized by the operation. An additional 63 acres are attractive for expansion. There are four plots involved under the following circumstances. Plot Number 1 consists of 70 acres on which the operating units are primarily located This is vested in the County Board of Supervisors and subject to lease of 1964. Plot Number 2 is owned by Conoco and contains 23.3 acres. Plot Number 3 having 17 acres is titled to Conoco. Plot Number 4, (13.1 acres) remains titled to the city since Conoco has failed to exercise its options. A site plan is included at the end of this section. A diagram showing flows of basic materials and products is included at the end of Section I. C. End Users One consumer item is shipped from the plant. This is garden hose. Other end uses for the PVC resins and compounds comprise an almost endless list. Examples are: floor tiles, upholstery materials, food wrap film, metal coating, auto tops, weather stripping, surgical tubing, electrical wire insulation, industrial and domestic piping, shoe soles and toys.
