Technical advances, w idely influencing ihe endire cmiliok for ihe production and use of industrial power, w ill be featured af the 17th National Exposition of Power and Mechanical En gineering. Returning once more to its traditional site in Grand Central Pafrce, The Exposition will be held coincident with the annual m ee.'ng of ihe American Society of Mechanical En gineers.
D U R IN G a h is to ry of a lm o st 25 years, th e N ational Exposi tion of P ow er and M echanical E n gineering has becom e a strong in stitution, unique in a num ber of respects. E stablished shortly after the first W orld W ar, it then satis fied, and continues to fulfill a w ell recognized p u rp o se in joining' the general interests of consum ers of power and producers of pow er generating equipm ent. The ex ceptional facts associated w ith the Exposition are th a t it provides a forum for the exchange of techni cal and engineering inform ation concerning pow er problem s, as w ell as a display, of the m ost re cent advances in m ethods and equipm ent.
T hreefold Influence
The influence of the Exposition is th ree fo ld . F o re m o st and m ost obvious is its d irec tly p ro d u ctiv e value in th e visual sim plification of questions concerning the com position, m odification, and m ain te n a n c e oJ: p o w e r p la n ts a n d th e d is
tribution and use of pow er. In this aspect, it is a w o rk in g d em o n stra tion-display of special engineering equipm ent, having a substantial m erchandising flavor.
The second potential of the Ex position is th e aid ren d ered to th e form ation of projections and. plans, o ften ru n n in g se v e ra l year's ahead of realization on new plants, reo r g a n iz a tio n s, a n d b e tte r m e n ts . It is, above all, an exposition fo r indus trial planners, including all proj ects w hich convert energy or ap ply pow er directly.
T hird, and in some w ays m ost in flu en tial, is th e v alu e of th e E x position as an educational m edium , for it serves visitors, alm ost w ith out exception, as an institution w here specialists are enabled to discuss th e w o rk of specialists o u t side th eir own, often narrow fields; and inspect the fruits of their u n dertakings.
Forum for Engineers
P rogress in m ethods, practice, and equipm ent design, as revealed
by th e exhibits, prom ise a consid erably g reater advance ail along th e line th an has often been noted at these biennial displays because of the dual influence of innovations in w ar production and also the
p a r tia l su sp e n se of commercial a n i
m ation during the past decade. M any products at the Pow er Show w ill be entirely new , others are re vised to incorporate an im proved selection of m aterials. New m eth ods of m anufacture have also en couraged design changes from the m otive of econom y in a good m any instances.
T he Exposition, as in past years, is p rim arily a forum fo r th e m anu facturers and users of pow er plant equipm ent-- fuel handling;; com bustion; the distribution, econom iz ing; and utilization of h e a a u x i l aries; m easuring and recording in strum ents; controls, and even ap plications of pow er in a num ber of classes of m achinery, especially that intended for the construction, u p k ee p , an d o v erh a u lin g ' o? p o w er plants.
