BEST WALL GYPSUM COMPANY GYPSUM WALLBOARD MANUAL 1965 EDITION Section 5 Sub-Section D TILE BACKER BOARD Bestwall Tile Backer is the name of the new product released by Bestwall to compete with U.S.G.'s W/R Board and National's vinyl faced Bathroom board. This product has a light blue face paper to distinguish it from other gypr am board products and a highly treated core which makes it even more rc sistant to water moisture than gypsum sheathing. It is available 1 wide x 8% 11* or 12* long, with tapered edges. The end bundling tape will be similar to that used on Tru-Grain and Eternawall, wiuh the size printed on a white end bundling tape and showing "Bestwall Tile Backer" pasted on the face of the end bundl ing tape. Application specifications are covered in the attached material which is available from the Advertising Department in the standard manner. Application Please notice Bestwall Tile Backer is applied similarly to regular gypsum wallboard insofar as nailing, cutouts, and details around the tub or shower are concerned, except that a special self-adhering vinyl tape 2" wide is specified to cover the exposed core around holes for pipes and other cutouts in the board and over the corner joints or any other joints which occur in the area to be tiled. 'This tape is 2" wide by 16* long. Approximately 1 roll is necessary per thousand square feet of board. The nails should be driven flush with the paper surface but not in a dimple. If the paper surface is broken, a piece of the special tape should be used to cover the cut or exposed areas* Special point application is not required for Bestwall TLle Backer Board around cut or exposed raw edges. Application Advantages 1* Bestwall*s board has an advantage in that it may be used above the area to be tiled and with the joints & nailheads in this area trea bed as with regular tapered edge x^allboard, can then be primed and painted with the rest of the regular wallboard areas. A waterproof primer or sealer over the wallboard under the tile is not required. Tile may be applied directly to Bestwall Tile Backer with the adhesive recommended by the Tile Manufacturer. Bear in mind that Bestwall's board may be applied either horizontally or vertically,) If it is applied horizontally, then the paper edge of the board should be applied just above the edge of tlie tub or shower receptacle (held up approximately |n or held up by means of a Special Metal Section available with Metal Corners and Casings)* If the board is applied vertically, then the special self adhering vinyl tape should be applied over the open edge of the board which xs down at the tub or shower receptacle edge a Product Bestwall's material is fully competitive with USG's and differs entirely from that of National* . -- regular gypsum wallboard with a sheet of 2 mil clear vinyl over the face surface* If a square foot of material is cut from a full sheet of each of the three products, then put in a bucket of water, Bestwall's and USG's will perform essentially equally and float for a long period of time while National's will act as a regular gypsum walnboard, quickly absorb water and sink. The "Boat" sample widely promoted by USG has their recommended painted treatment around the edges which makes it more water resistant and able to float for a longer period of time, than a piece cut from the center of a full sheet of their material* To make an equal comparision, Bestwall's board should have the tape used for the cut edges applied around the edges of a sample which has been cut from a sheet of similar size to that used as the "Boat". In this regard, if National's, board were treated in a similar manner, it would not remain floating as long as the Bestwall or U.S. G,, products, since the back paper on National's is not as moisture resistant as the back paper on the other two products and with the regular wallboard core* Once the water has penetrated the back paper, it will be rapidly absorbed into the core.
