(Also there are probably others that I haven't thought of yet). The urgent item: We need to discuss and agree on a couple more members of the Scientific Review Panel in light of the Oversight Committee's charge to us to generate a more international flavor on the SRP. Stuart Cagen has circulated the CV of a Chinese scientist Li Giulan who was involved with the biomarker portion of the NCI/CAPM study. Shawn Tsai knows her personally and vouches for her objectivity and desire to playa positive role in the SRP. In addition we have a number of European candidates who could provide expertise and credibility to the SRP. A separate mailing will list them. The not-so-urgent item: I need to bring the committee up to date on the results of the Oversight Committee meeting since they met to discuss our recommendations for our role in the grand scheme of things. To this end, please send George Woodall by the close of business Tuesday, August 7 your availability for a conference call during the rest of this week. Will the committee revise the document based on the OC comments and then reissue it? I made notes during the discussion which I will be happy to share with the technical committee. I believe that I accurately recorded the recommendations/decisions of the OC. I am particularly interested in the section titled "Interactions with the Scientific Review Panel." In the first bullet, my notes indicate that the agreement on the wording is: The Chair of the Technical Review Committee may attends meetings only as an observ'er. My recollection (good NOith Carolina term) of the discussion was that we wanted to encourage full committee participation as observers. The challenge for the TRC is not to actively participate in order to maintain the independence of both the Pis and the SRP, but, at the same time, be involved and informed enough to manage the project. The second and third bullets were deleted. We added a bullet The Scientific Review Panel reports decisions to Technical Review Committee. We also made the recommendation that the Ethics Panel review this structure. That document should reflect the decisions of the Oversight Committee. Regarding the interaction of the Technical Committee (TC) with the SRP, my recollection (we recollect things in Kentucky, too) of the Oversight Committee discussion was that the full TC would meet with the SRP at the annual review to receive the updates from the investigators and would be present for and take part in comment and discussion. I thought that we agreed that the full TC would not participate in other SRP meetings or conference calls. Instead, the TC would be represented by an observer, the Chair or its designee. After a couple talks with Stu I think that there is a compromise position which would allow both the Chair and Vice-chair to be observers. Initially Stu would be the Vice-chair. I don't believe that either Bill Broddle (Conoco) or Don Burnett (BP) have the time to be involved in SRP discussions. I know that Carol Fairbrother doesn't. I think that this accommodates Stu's desire to have a closer view of the workings of the process without appearing to put undue pressure on the SRP. I suggest that we discuss this at the next OC meeting or call.
