Exhibit Explores Conservation Issues of Malawi The nation of Malawi, Africa, is representative of many third world countries whose people have devastated their natural resources in order to survive. This nation's environmental issues are the focus of a new exhibit by the Anniston Museum of Natural History. Malawi: Preservation for the Past, Conservation for the Future explores the societal pressures of several Malawian tribes as they cope with dwindling natural resources. Pollution, deforestation, soil erosion, and poaching are viewed through the lens of human demands for food, shelter, and survival. Planning for this exhibit began in August 1996, when then Curator of Exhibits Paul Siboroski visited Malawi as part of a museum exchange program funded through the United States Information Service (USIS) and the American Association of Museums (AAM). While m Malawi, Siboroski visited several game parks and preserves and spoke with park officials and Peace Corps volunteers about their environmental education programs. Meetings with Malawian government officials and non-governmental organizations were held to discuss the environmental issues facing Malawi today. Later that year, a representative from the Museums of Malawi, Lovemore Mwandira, visited Anniston to learn more about this country's educational outreach programs and the role our museums play in educating the public about environmental issues and solutions. Throughout the research and planning process, it was apparent that the children of Malawi were a crucial element in conservation; it is their ultimate control over environmental issues that will determine future sustainable resources. Therefore, educating the children of Malawi has become imperative. The exhibit examines educational outreach programs conducted by the Museums of Malawi in an effort to sensitize children to the critical condition of their environment. These programs provide hands-on and instantaneous solutions, empowering Malawians with the ability to immediately impact the problems of their environment. Malawi: Preservation for the Past, Conservation of the Future will be on display in the Changing Exhibits Gallery from June 20 through August 1. After its exhibition at the Museum, the exhibit will be available to travel to Malawi where the important message of conservation and preservation will be exhibited in schools and museums around the country. Research and development for this exhibit has been made possible through an International Partnership Among Museums (IPAM) award by the AAM. Funding for this IPAM exchange is provided by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of USIA. IPAM is administered by AAM. Saturday, July 19, 8:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Wild Walk: Caves! Adventure to Tumbling Rock Cave in Jackson County and explore it's natural wonders. Expert spelunkers, Jim Loftin and Michael Ray will lead this trip and teach the fundamentals of caving. The Museum will provide transportation, helmets, and lights. Participants need to bring a lunch and water. This walk is suitable for children ages 13 and older (children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent). Payment by July 16 confirms your reservation. It is completely landlocked and is slightly larger than Pennsylvania in size. Although savannah woodlands cover most of Malawi, evergreen forests flourish in valleys and on mountains where groundwater is plentiful. Malawi also has grasslands on its plateau areas. A large part of Malawi's economy depends on agriculture. Forests are routinely cleared to provide farmland; this has led to deforestation and the loss of valuable natural resources. Deforestation is a primary concern on Malawi's list of environmental problems. Deforestation is the permanent destruction of indigenous (native) forests and woodlands. Most deforestation occurs in the tropical rainforests of South America and Africa, but it affects the entire planet. Human needs for land and wood drive the demand. Areas are cleared for a variety of reasons: A forest is cleared to create land for agricultural purposes to feed a growing population. Wood is used commercially to supply the world market with teak, mahogany, meranti, and ebony. It is also used as building material and firewood. The land is used for cash crops and cattle ranching. So, what is the big deal about cutting down a few trees? The consequences are severe. Every part of nature works with every other part in a delicate balance. When one part is disrupted, it affects the others. For example, by cutting down trees in the forests and woodlands of Malawi and its neighboring countries, the climate of the Earth is altered. The carbon dioxide (C02) level, a major contributor to the greenhouse effect, rises in the Earth's atmosphere and traps heat from the sun. This heat should bounce back into space, but it cannot escape due to the blanket of C02. There are fewer trees to absorb atmospheric carbon dioxide and global warming occurs as a consequence. Burning trees also releases more C02 into the atmosphere. Have you ever wondered why the climate in the tropics is damp and humid? This is because trees absorb ground water and release it back into the environment through a process called transpiration. Removing trees from these areas converts a moist environment into a dry, arid region. This is part of a process called desertification. Through this process, an area that had previously been productive and fertile is converted into a desert. As a result, loss of habitat causes the extinction of many species of plants and animals. Did you know that more than 50% of the species in the world live in forests? It is estimated that if deforestation continues at its present rate all tropical forests will be gone by the year 2050. That means the loss of countless species. . Malawi's most severe environmental problem is erosion. A growing population requires an abundant food supply. To satisfy this need Malawians have cleared a great deal of their forests and woodlands to obtain farmland, but this is a temporary solution. The topsoil is usually suitable for agriculture; however, lack of ground cover leads to erosion. Topsoil is swept into lakes and rivers and the remaining soil is generally in poor condition. In a few growing seasons, the land is no longer useful. The soil also builds up in the waterways and causes problems in aquatic habitats. The people of Malawi are working with Denmark to replace some of the destroyed forests. They are also being educated in more efficient agricultural methods. Monsanto Fund has provided financial assistance to continue the Museum's seventh grade outreach program for another school year. The Fund has underwritten the program for the past two years. In the program, Museum Outreach Teacher Gina Morey visits every seventh grade classroom in Calhoun County three times during the school year bringing live animals, museum specimens, and hands-on objects. "Monsanto is committed to the education of young people," commented Blake Hamilton, Monsanto Plant Manager. "Being a math, science, and technology company, our interests are in developing those areas of understanding in young people. Our increasing global community will require that knowledge from those youth as well. We can further that knowledge by partnering with the Anniston Museum of Natural History." This is the third year that the Monsanto Fund has contributed to this Museum outreach program. Last year, over 4,700 seventh grade children and their educators were visited by the Museum's Outreach Teacher. Anniston Museum Director Ellen Donovan says, "The youth of this community benefit tremendously when corporations such as Monsanto make such strong committments to informal science education." The Anniston Museum is extremely grateful to the Monsanto Fund for this important contribution, which carries the Museum's mission of enhancing knowledge and understanding of living things and their environments into the classroom. Museum Represented in Nation's Capitol Recently, the Museum was represented Washington, D.C. by a very special local teacher. Sharon Padgett, a secondary teacher at Pleasant Valley, was selected as Alabama's 1996 recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. During her week in our nation's capitol, Sharon attended an awards presentation and met with congressional members about educational issues. She also had the opportunity to highlight five groups that are unique to Alabama, and she chose the Anniston Museum of Natural History. Thanks, Sharon, for the wonderful contributions you have made to teaching and for giving the Museum "national exposure." Congratulations on receiving this prestigious award. Museum Staff Updates Farewell to Melissa Dunaway, Museum Store employee. Melissa left the Museum in March to work at Ms. Faye's Daycare. Scott previously worked for Acker Electric Company, Inc. He will be responsible for a variety of duties including construction of new exhibits and exhibit maintenance. Junior League Contributes Funds For Discovery Room The Junior League of Anniston-Calhoun, Inc. recently presented the Anniston Museum of Natural History with a check for $1,577. The money will be used for the ongoing operation of NatureSpace, the Museum's new discovery room, which opened in September 1996. The Junior League of Anniston-Calhoun, Inc. supported the discovery room during its planning and production stages with contributions of volunteer time and money. Members of the Junior League continue to work in NatureSpace as volunteer facilitators; they assist visitors with the interactive exhibits in the discovery room. The recent donation was made possible by revenue generated through the Junior League's cookbook sale, Wakefield's sale, and their Bargain Bazaar. This continuing partnership between the Museum and the Junior League will benefit the community for many future generations.
