This entire report was pre pared by Dr. 3mith. Substantially all of the employees currently on the roll at the Smelter are listed. On pages g and 9 appear a number of individuals, most of whom have relatively short service and upon whom x-.re have no follow up data. They are currently being studied and any pertinent information on them will be furnished in a supplement to this. You will note that we have recommended to Management the removal from further lead exposure, or substantial reduction to lead exposure, the majority of individuals listed. For practical reasons, Management has not been able to carry out these recommendations except in a few instances during the early part of our work so that actually most of the individuals who are marked l,LE", that is recommended reduction of exposure, or "RE", recommended removal from exposure, are still working as they were. From information %ve have you may, for practical purposes, regard the date hired as the date of commencement of exposure up to date; that is to say that when we asked the Time Section to compile for us days absent from work on these individuals, they stated that this would be a lengthy and involved task and Mr. 3assett assured us that no individuals were absent a considerable portion of the time, if for no other reason than that they were automatically terminated after a short absence unless it were due to illness. In accordance with Dr. Smith's telephone conversation with you last Friday, we have omitted our guess as to when these men can safely be made available again to industry at large where they can safely accept and be acceptable for such types of work and normally safe exposures as they can assume to have been prior N9573 Dr. R. It is our understanding that we will continue to follow medically those individuals requiring such medical supervision until such time as they can be regarded as having no contra-indications, to employment in industry, except as they may have had prior to employment at the Smelter and that you will select and indicate to Management who these individuals are and give your estimate of the varying lengths of time that they will probably have to be followed. We wish, of course, to be likewise informed simultaneously. It remains obscure to U3 under 'what particular arrangements the above will be effected so as soon as this becomes clear we should like to be so informed. We will welcome any specific suggestions you may have as to what constitutes adequate follow up on these individuals from a medical standpoint if it develops that we are privileged to do so and at what point we may feel justified in withdrawing our medical supervision.
