Staklis Subject: MSDS for Disc Pads with Asbestos Backing I just received another request for an MSDS for a disc pad with Asbestos backing. In the past, this was completed by providing copies of two MSDS: one for the disc pad and a second for Organic Asbestos pads. The formulas of the latter have the same ingredients as Asbestos backing layers. I perceive several shortcomings with this approach: - There was no formal reference to asbestos in the disc pad MSDS. - It implies that all disc pads may have asbestos backing layers (not true) - The customer is left with the impression that risk is the same as Asbestos disc pads. As a potential improvement, I drafted up a revised MSDS for a disc pad with asbestos backing - which formally calls out the reference to the asbestos MSDS. This also provides a handy way to state that disc pads handled normally do not pose a hazard and to list those semimet formulas that still have some part numbers with asbestos in the backing. (These are all left overs from the "good old days" where the customer does not want to spend the time and effort needed to qualify a non-asbestos replacement.)
