His history is th at he lived in the area of this slatu anti th at for most of his life, aside from farm ing. that hati lxs!n liis sole occupation. The slatu workers ui tine plant which we- observed were not tuqjosed to any quartz-- The plant atljaccnt to this mill had about 3 quartz in the slate it used. You will note it considering slatu that the silica content of slate varies in different areas so we can't say that slate has a definite amount of silica without determining it first. The same holds tru e for grnn- ite. There arc certain granites which have much less than 35?c. I think most of the Vermont granite contains about 35rf quartz. Yu can see the futility of tryinff to compare X-rays of the lungs from workers in one industry to thane of another. - This is an X-ray of a slate miller. You- will notice he has a few pulmonary m arkings, w ith quite a bit of fine linear fibrosis. We found- in- the group of slate miller workers one ease who had an active tuberculosis. He had been in this slate mill about six years and apparently the tuberculosis was just incidental and not a result of his occupation. Other slate workers showed hilus thickenings with a few calcifications. Still other slate workers showed a different picture but not extensive pathology. This is an X-ray of another slate worker showing quite a bit of shadows in the lower portion of the rig h t lung with a few calcifications. _ . r Tliis is the X-ray of a man win had. or has. asbestosis. Ills occunation was that of cleaning and restoring the as. bestos on pipes in one of our government hospitals. He had been working at the trade alioul six years, f think,* and you will see. he lias fibrosis of both lungs. The character of the fibrosis is quite a bit different from that of th e gran ite workers. He hud disability and the government com- V p v n s a t c d him for it. This is a graph showing classification of silicosis. The first classification was made in South Africa.' They started out classifying their eases as prim ary and secondary stages, and as they learned mure about the disease they hail to add to this classification. Dr. Russell acted us Assistant Chief of the Tultercuitisis IIosi>itai Section of the U. S. Veterans' Bureau. From 11)2-4--30 he was in chars of Held studies as to-the health of workers in dusty trades fur the UniUni States Public Health Service. In 1930 he was appointed as official* representative of the United States ut the internatinnni Silicosis Conference at the League of Nations at Johannesburg. Suutii Africa, of which he acted as Vice-Chairman. In 1930 he became Chief Surgeon of the U. S. Bureau of Mines. Dr. Russell has made numerous contributions to medical magazines, and has written many reports fur the U. S. Public Health Service, covering particularly the Held of pulmonary diseases and more specifically those diseases resulting from the inhalation of dust. 'U b rA > rL .
