January 25, 1968 Gas Masks - Power 1

This memo is to confirm our conversation and discussion January 23, 1968, on use and availability of gas masks in the event of a chlorine leak in the chlorinator room at Power 1.
Three all service gas masks are readily available in the area near the valve location on the northeast corner of department 6 which is to be blocked in in the event of a chlorine leak. Should a major leak occur and wind direc tion or velocity be such that one of the all service gas masks could not be used, the self-contained Scott air pak located in the center of the department 6 control room should be used. Since prevailing winds are south-southeast, this Scott air pak mask is ideally located for emergency use in the area of the chlorinator room. If a chlorine leak occurs when the wind direction is north or west, in all probability no mask or one of the all Bervice masks could be used to close the valve.
All personnel involved should be made aware of the fact that the Scott air pak in department 6 is available for emergency use by utilities department personnel.
We would be happy to provide training in the use of the Scott air pak and refresher training in the use of the all service gas maBk.
s'
The purchase and installation of additional gas masks based on the current procedure and potential hazard should a leak develop in the chlorinator room, cannot be Justified at this time on the basis of providing added protection.
