N \ % \ / / ASBESTOS TAPE ASBESTOS TAPE Porter Listing Tapes are flameproof, and foremost in appear ance and quality. Flexibility, and uniformity of weave, width and thickness guarantees superior service and insulation. High tensile strength insures efficient application. Porter Listing Tapes are recommended especially for arma tures, electrical wires and cables, hot steam pipes, switchboard leads, bus bars, underground cables and numerous other uses. There are two main types of Asbestos Tape -- Plain and Me tallic; The plain tape is woven from .015" to 1/4" thick and the metallic may be woven from 1/16" to 1/4" thick. Most fine tapes are used by the electrical industry as an insula tor and. as a carrier for insulating varnishes or treatments. Where the tape acts as an insulator, and for special electrical applications, a Non-Ferrous Tape is supplied.' Ferrous Tape is generally used for all other purposes. Porter follows the American Society for Testing Materials specifications and tolerances for Asbestos Tapes. These are established under Designation D-315 and D-2100 and include thicknesses from .010" to 1/4". The ability to weave tapes with uniform widths, even edges, high tensile strength, maximum footage, and thicknesses has long been a specialty of Porter. Plain (non-metallic) Tapes of thin dimension are design ed primarily for electrical insulating purposes such as motor windings, where there is need for a heat conductive, thermally stable insulation capable of absorbing a high percentage of insulating varnishes and treatments. The impregnated tape forms a moisture barrier essential to efficient motor operation. Heavier plain tapes are widely used as a durable flameproof wrapping for lead sheathed cables, as an insulation for pipe hangers, as safety protection for covering hot piping, as stressrelieving pads in welding operations, and as a component of r\ \ULTr SPACE ASBESTOS TAPE LOOM packings and gaskets. When specially treated, these tapes pro vide such advantages as arc proofing and resistance to oil, water and corrosion for electrical cables; they can also be produced to withstand the destructive action of thermo-mechan ical forces for other applications. Metallic (wire-inserted) Tapes are designed for sei~vice re quiring higher tensile strength or a high coefficient of friction or where extreme abrasive conditions are present. They are used as the major component in woven brake linings and clutch facings and as oil burner wicking. These tapes are woven with special alloy wires for applications where excessively high temperatures are encountered. The thermal stability of asbestos tape adapts it particularly for use as a conveyor belting for carrying hot materials. Both plain and metallic tapes are made for this purpose. Some are woven with the top ply of plain yarn and the bottom ply of metallic yarn to resist stretch and may be specially treated to increase resistance to abrasion. Electrical Insulation Classification: Asbestos tape as made for the electrical industry is furnished in three types, classified on the basis of magnetic rating determinations which serve to identify performance limits. Type 2 (Magnetic Rating 0.75 Maximum) is intended only for special applications where the asbestos is of primary importance as electrical insulation used on magnet wire and when used primarily as a dielectric. Type 4 (Magnetic Rating 2.00 Maximum) is intended for use where the asbestos is of secondary importance as elec trical insulation and where it is applied in combination with other materials of comparably higher. Type 6 (Magnetic Rating 4.00 Maximum) is for general purposes where magnetic rating is not a factor. THICKNESS Asbestos tapes are available in thicknesses of .015, .020, .025, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8. 3/16, & 1/4. Greater thicknesses available for industrial and special application. PAGE 4 ASBESTOS TAPE WIDTHS Asbestos tapes are available in widths ranging from to 10" wide. GRADES Asbestos tapes are available in grades from commercial (75%) through AAAA (99-100%). Tapes for electrical purposes are made in an underwriters grade.
