Other duties have necessitated some neglect of my correspondence. In so far as the special problem of occular Impairment is concerned, as I I a concomitant or sequel of lead poisoning, I know of no ophthalmologist i who has specific competence based on experience. The occular manifestations ! of lead poisoning are rare, and in my own experience, retinal hemorrhage i has been the commonest occular complication. On the other hand, retro bulbar neuritis has been reported in association with the disease in other countries and in earlier times, especially in Australia. I believe therefore that a careful examination at the hands of an ophthal mologist of recognized competence will yield the information which is needed. There are several such men in Cincinnati (where, of course, my acquaintance with physicians is best and most direct). The men who suggest themselves to me in this relationship are Dr. Donald Lyle , who is the head of the Ophthalmologic Department of this Medical College, and Dr. Albert Brown, whom I have known intimately for many years. Either of these men would be glad to consult with me, informally, and I should be pleased to have the opportunity (without cost, of course) to talk with them about their findings, especially for my own Information. The office addresses of these men are given below. X have no doubt that there are highly competent ophthalmologists in Columbus should you prefer to consult them. In February, 1957 you did some quantitative urine and. blood analysis for lr. Daniel M. Murphy, Marion, Ohio, in this blood poisoning claim, The urine showed .02 mg. of lead per liter, and the blood showed .17 (spectrc- graphic) mg. of lead per 100 grams. This claim was allowed for lead poisoning and claimant subsequently filed an application alleging that he has suffered considerable loss of peripheral vision in both eyes, especially the right due to the lead poisoning. One of the eye specialists to whom we referred this claimant reported to us that the usual manifestation of lead poisoning is a retro-bulbar neuritis, and the claimant has exhibited no occular evidence of this condition. However, his eye examination seemingly was most unsatisfactory inasmuch as he found central visual accuity efficiency in right eye both corrected and uncorrected to be 91.5 percent, and the central visual accuity efficiency for the left eye both corrected and uncorrected was 95*7$. Met the entire visual field examination produced a visual efficienty (A.M.A. schedule) of 60.hd for the right eye and hB.Bfo for the left eye. He was asked to explain this great discrepancy, and he attributed it to malingering on the part of the claimant.
