WHITINGS (Calcium Carbonates)
Whitings include natural chalks, natural crystalline calcites, and chemically precipitated calcium carbonates
The calcites are dry- or water-groundj water-grinding resulting in better separation of coarse particles. Water-ground whitings may further be classified to obtain a narrow range of particle size which is generally in the finer range. This promotes higher gloss and good suspension, A variant is Lesamite, 6303 dry, which is coarse-classified to give low gloss and low oil absorption.
Natural chalks have softer settling than other whitings.
Precipitated calcium carbonates are more uniform and easier to grind, - They have the best holdout of any extender pigment. Calcium rosinate treatment of pre cipitated whiting promotes high loadability by improved wetting.

Unclassified whitings, the least expensive calcium carbonates, are recom mended for general use in flats, primers, eggshell enamels and bam paints. Flatness is most easily attained with such extenders. Durability and wear resistance also suggest use of 6301 in traffic paints,
6300
Also unclassified and used for the same purposes as 6301, water-ground 6300 has the added advantages of greater fineness and cleaner color. Consistency is somewhat higher than 63OI. Where high gloss is not required,, it can be substituted for 6310.
6310 Water-ground and classified, 6310 is used in floor and deck gloss enamels where it shows good suspension, good abrasion resistance, good gloss and high holdout.
6303 Coarse classification promotes high flatness and good non-penetrating finishes of this consistency.
6302 Natural chalk is recommended only for those enamels where its softer settling is imperative. Use of 6300 is encouraged otherwise.

Precipitated Pure Cal M is a replacement for the no-longer-available 1999 dry. It is used in the Paintercraft Line where the rather high oil absorption permits high paint-load. It further has a puff quality which may not be duplicated by combination of 6322 and 632ii.

Treated precipitated whiting is used in gloss and semi-gloss paints.. and primers and sealers where it shows improved wetting, easier grind ing, less scoring of the roller mill and very high holdout. Calcium rosinate treatment promotes high loadability.
63L3 Micromilled 6322.
632U A micronized whiting with extremely fine particles, low residue, and < very high oil absorption. Cost is quite high.
'GYPSUMS
Gypsum, 6355 dry, has better transparency than 6350 and is therefore better suited for furniture fillers. 6350 usually has better whiteness and should be used for all other purposes.
