If mechanical problems with the pumps develop and the lift station begins overflowing, contact the Area Foreman on days or the Shift Supervisor on the back shifts so that repairs can be made to the pumps as soon as possible. If it appears the lift station will be overflowing for several hours while repairs are being made, notify the OHC lead operator and take a sample of the lift station to OHC for analysis. 6. Carbon filter regeneration will be performed per the SOP issued on December 19, 1977. The lead operator will note in both the VC and EC log books the time that the VC scrubber is diverted to the segregated sewer and the time it is switched back to the storm sewer. The length of regeneration and amount of water on the scrubber should be kept to a practical minimum. 7. When the scrubber is diverted to the segregated sewer for any reason, the lead operator is to notify the OHC lead operator of the time of diversion and amount of extra water being sent to the WTU. 8. The water to the VC heavy still scrubber and the EC scrubbershould be keptto a minimum at all times sincethey go to the lift station. If there is a reason for increasing the water flow to either scrubber, it should be noted in the log book. 9. Since the EC unit pad drains to the lift stationwater hoses,safety showers, and eye wash hoses should not be run continually to the pad. If it is neces sary to run water on the pad, the flow rate is to be kept to a minimum. The importance of water pollution control in Plant B cannot be overemphasized. With the additional equipment that has been installed in the past year, and the extra effort that each of us has made, we have been able to reduce the organics in the Plant B effluent from several thousand to several hundred pounds per day. But we are still not down to our permit limit of 420 lb/day, which is extremely low. For example our 420 lb/day limit of organics in the effluent would convert to only 40 gallons per day of EDC or 34 gallons per day of Trichlor or 31 gallons per day of Perchlor. The only way we are going to meet our permit is for each of us to continue to work hard controlling our discharge from the EC-VC units and to be more aware of how each minor segment of our operations affects the total organic discharge from Plant B.
