In all those years these pads vere only occasionally used elsevhere, but alvnyo along railroad tracks, the only others known to us belngthe 3Tth Street Pennsylvania Railroad Station, the Sew York Central Station la Buffalo, >. Y. Central tracks through the Bell Tele phone Laboratories on the lower vest side of Manhattan, and tbe Canadian National Railway Terminal in Montreal. ' H : In tbe 1530's, L.I.A. conferred with a rancher of people who bad experience with thes*. pads such as tbe Ter-iinal Engineer of tbe Hew York Central, Janes Rude man, structural engineer for saay of the Im portant Park Avenue buildings, and tbe principal tsanufacturer of the pads. For several reasons tbe conclusion was reached that these pads could have a such broader naxket than they were then enjoying if they vere properly proooted and their writs brought to the attention of architects and engineers generally. For emnple, every city has rail road tracks within its Units but only Sew Yor_ vas using the pads to soy extent sod there ocly the Sew Yorx Central. (In the Statler-Hilton Hotel over tbe Pennsylvania and Long Island tracks at Penn Station vibra tion fren the trains can be distinctly felt in sore of tbe roces.) Subways create stailor vibrations to railroad trains hut the pads had never been used under buildings adjacent to subways. Vhile relatively few cities have subways. Hew York's systes alone, along vlth Philadelphia, Chicago, Toronto, London, Paris, Ulan and others, offer substantial possibilities. In fact 31 cities now have subways either in operation, under construction or planned. The pais had never been used to protect against vibration frctt heavy street traffic and they night be effective there, opening a very extensive and cccpletely new aarket. Tbe dearth of property in cities on which to erect new buildings vas establishing a definite trend to use air rights over railroad tracks and yards, sdding greatly to the narket for tbe pads along railroad tracks. For example, U. 8. Steel Carp, has Just announced plans for nine apartaent building! over the Hew York Central's freight yards In aid-Manhattan. ; s L i * - r If i -1 0 4 , 1 As a result L.I.A. began to promote anti-vibration pads through publicity, advertising and personal selling on a case history basis with a fair amount of success. The Park Avenue area continued, naturally, to use these pads on all of its new structures, although in a few cases one of tbe original pads used under tbe old buildings torn down vere used over again since they were still In good condition and tbe old steel vas also used. Nevertheless this substantiated our clala that tbe pals could be depended upon for the Ilfs of tbe building. Using a nominal figure of X> tons per Job these buildings vlll account for close to 50 tons of lead. Added to the 200 tens for the three large Park Are. buildings previously sectioned and an estimated Elnl&a of another 100 tons for other recent Park Ave. buildings, the total cases to about 600 tecs of lead In the last five years, aostly in the last three years. We can sssuse safely that current usage at present rats of construction sod acceptance of the pads is in the neighborhood of 200 to 300 tons of sheet lead per year. If acceptance outside Rev York vert e<pnal to that in Rev York the figure could cosily reach several thousand tons a year. This again could be Multiplied several fold if acceptance can be gained for use against heavy street traffic. The first installation In England, in the Sloans Gcuare Underground Station building in London, has Just been made aixl there is active interest in Australia. We have no doubt that proper engineering data on the effectiveness and loading of these pads would help oaterially in their acceptance. We knew of several large Job, like the new Columbia Broadcasting System building In Sev York, that have been ioet for lack of such data, and, Incidentally, it has Just been reported to us that subvay-created vibration la now causing trouble to tenants and In the C.B.9. studioe themselves. Even Laynoo 1 Hilar of Bolt, Eerar.e'; and Sevsan, who reported field test# on Philharmonic Hall and the Careen Elizabeth Hotel at our oeatlng bant year, polnte-1 out that until Escre field data war# available tha data ha reported would have to be uaed conservatively. The foregoing applies to building foundations only. Machinery foundation# offer another substantial market for lead-sabetto* antivibration pad# but any reliable estimate of tha sire of this narket 1# impossible as too little 1* now known about their effectiveness with different kinds of nachinery. We do knew that they have bean uaed undar about 1/3 of the newspaper printing presses Installed la the last 20 or 30 years. Including all the Bcripps-Howard papers. One average newspaper press would require about OOO lb. of lead in the pads. Goodfriend and Associates have recently field tested presses and report that the pad* are effective, which should help to further this application when the result* have been published. Although we have not yet seen the report, we are advised that Ooodfrlend has now tested an air-conditioning cooling tower on lead padj and reports thee to be effective for this purpose also. Two such Installations have been node in Bev Tort on office buildings In nldtova Manhattan and a third is specified for the cooling tower cn the Bev fork City Health Deportment laboratories about to be constructed, Uhile these Installation* only used about 125 lb. of lead each, there are literally thousands of potential Installations. Another field of use Is under electrical transformers. Ob* of th# leading emnuiacturers of transforoers, HcGrav-Edison, uses these pads uzsler one of its line of transformer* which happens to be considerably noisier than other lines. By the use of lead-asbestos pads the noise frets this particular type la brought down to the level of the others, effecting a reduction cf as ouch as 7 db. After a test order a coupl# of years ago, this manufacturer placed a cocnerclal order for BOO pads involving scoe 7 tons of lesd. We have not been permitted to publlcix* this use because all transformer manufacturer* shy sway free even ad mitting that transforoers oay be noisy. Other Isolated cases of machinery pads Include air turbine teet pads, a boiler in a state building at Trenton, B. J., s steel mill la Genoa, Italy (the exact application la unknown), and an Inquiry on these pads for laundry machinery. In Prance and Ergland similar pads are also used under machinery often of the Impact type. j It appears from information now available that lead pads will give the best account of thenaelvea in reasonably heavy oachlnery where tha loads on tbs pad* are in the neighborhood of 200 psl and where vibration 75frequencies above CP* predominate. The uarket will have to be developed, however, for each type of oocbinary at first since many engineer* are not well informed aa to the actual frequencies they encoiutr In certain types of machinery. Ve do believe, however, that there Is enough aaohlnery In which the pads will be effective to account for a market of several thousand tons over the next 5 to 10 years If aggressively and intelligently developed. To date there has been no real effort to develop this market. We believe a socevhat similar schedule should he continued with perhaps a little wore space in PROGRESSIVE ARCHITECTURE. Also about five years ago ve Issued a brochure oo astl-vlbrstloo pads for building foundations strictly based on case histories. We believe a new brochure should now be published, tiling advantage of the many new case histories that can be cited particularly along subways and outside of 5ev York City. It should also include sumary technical data froa the laboratory and field testa conducted through I.L.Z.R.Q. and other field tests conducted by Bolt, Beranek and Sevaan oo the Lincoln Center project 1a Bev York and Ville Marie project In Montreal. Personal promotion with architects and engineers should be cootlnued- As for machinery pads, we have only advertised a couple of installs-, tlcns co a case history basis. Ve believe this should be continued as opportunities present themselves and that a modest brochure with available information to date should be Issued. We believe that the main effort should be through personal work, largely with machinery manufacturers, to delineate the various areas In which the pads are effective and to prcBOte then, case by case, as Information is developed and successful . results obtained. A Consideration night also be given to the retention by L.I.A. of an > acoustical consultant oo a modest retainer to advise co new applications as they arise and assist in the orderly assessment of data developed already or to be developed. Hiring 1963 t.I.A. handled about 2A0 inquiries on vibration resulting from its ads and in the last 20 months baa sent out nearly 5,000 pieces of literature in response to Inquiries on pads for building foundations, 2,000 on cooling tower pads and 2,100 on printing press pads.
