Dear Mr. Martin: v I must apologize for my very long delay in answering your letter of October 2, in which there is described a case of one Mr . who developed a paralysis after having painted the Tnsia^nr a tank in which Ethyl Gasoline had been stored. Offhand, the case seems to me to be a very clear-cut incident of cerebral hemorrhage, otherwise known as a paraly tic stroke. In any case, I should feel it was quite certain that the man suffered more damage from exposure to the fumes of the paint which he applied to the tank, than to any lead which may have been on the sides of the tank. The apparent fact that Mr. f B B P h a d had a similar stroke some years before, is further evidence for the above opinion. Such paralyses are not so uncommon that they require any special explanation. I believe that your suggestion that these tanks should be thoroughly steamed before being entered for paint ing or for any other reason, is one which should be carried out as a routine thing in the refinery.
