Dear Mr. Mehurin: Under date of March 1, 1957 you approved the U3e of Geon 8U.21 for direct contact with curing pickle and other edible liquids in federally inspected meat packing establishments. We now have a gray, rather than a red, color of this same material, identified as Geon 81700. Approximately 9h%, by weight, of 81700 is a mixture of polyvinyl chloride and Hycar rubber) the remaining 6% is a mixture of iron oxide (gray), mineral oil, titanium dioxide, and caloium atearate. The only difference in composition between 81700 and 8lU21 is the use of a small quantity of titanium dioxide and gray, rather than red, iron oxide for coloring pigments. We request that approval be given for the use of Oeon 81700 as a plastic pips compound for transporting curing pickle and other edible liquids in federally inspected meat packing establishments.
