Provided CBI warning to facility The following information was obtained verbally from Alex Navarro. Company Ownership: Binford Auto Wrecking has been owned by Binford Metals since 2017. Process Description: Binford Auto Wrecking ("the Facility") purchases cars for salvage via auction and from dropoffs on site. The Facility does not receive motor vehicle air conditioning units (MVACs) separately from vehicles. After checking the title on incoming cars, Facility staff remove the battery and send it to refrigerant and fluids removal. Vehicles are hooked up to a refrigerant recovery device, which drains the refrigerant out of the MVAC in the car to a tank. All MVACs are drained with the same device into the same tanks. When the tanks are full, Facility staff move it to a pallet to be sent in batches for off-site for reclamation/disposal. After recovering the refrigerants, Facility staff lift the car to drain out fuel and all other fluids. Vehicles destined to be parted out are then sent over to their parts yard. Otherwise, the vehicles are crushed and stacked to be sold for scrap. Staff Interview: Daniel Heins asked if sellers are paid more or less depending on if the refrigerant is drained before drop-off. Alex Navarro explained that there is no financial incentive for sellers to remove refrigerants/fluids prior to drop-off, and that all vehicles are assumed to be arriving with refrigerants/fluids in them and handled accordingly. The Facility sends the recovered tanks of refrigerant to Total Reclaim for reclamation/disposal. The Facility stockpiles tanks until they have a full pallet load to send to Total Reclaim. The Facility pays Total Reclaim for this service. The Facility receives an average of roughly 100 cars per day, with a significant degree of variability particularly depending on if they have any large auction purchases.
